Pick Your Poison: 1980, 1986, 1990, 2005 Mercedes-Benz Diesel

You need a car that will get you to your destination with minimal fuss, and maximum class, -- and you don't really care about speed. Forget the used and abused Japanese late models that litter craigslist and instead buy a used Mercedes-Benz with compression ignition. The only question is, how old?Wednesday, June 1, 2016

Luxury Liner: 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL

1979 was a strange year -- it started with the death of Sex Pistol's bassist Sid Vicious from a heroin overdose, then it snowed in the Sahara Desert for 30 minutes, the Shah fled Iran, and Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans were canceled due to a police strike...and that was only February. The world was changing, perhaps getting ready for the introduction of a vehicle so massive that it can influence the orbit of the moon. The C126 generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe was a massive luxury grand tourer with an abbreviated name -- the SEC (short for S-Klasse-Einspritzmotor-Coupé). The previous generation S-Class was only available in 4-door configuration, but with the 1981 release of the C126, Wednesday, December 16, 2015

39k Original Miles: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE W126

The W126 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was a plus sized luxury cruiser built like a tank from 1979 through 1991. This isn't a car that will carve corners like a Miata or coddle you to sleep like a Buick, but somewhere under layers of granite lives a heart that beats like clock and a ride quality like an orbiting satellite. Find this 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE here on eBaySaturday, June 6, 2015
5k: Big Pimpin: 1987 Mercedes Benz 420 SEL W126

It has been 6 years since Porsche released their 500 horsepower twin turbocharged 4-door luxury sedan known as the Panamera Turbo. The jab-cross combination of out of warranty Porsche service bills and befuddlingly hideous styling should have been a knockout for residual value, but the bubble butted brawler has been hanging in the fight like Floyd Mayweather's baby momma, and KBB pegs it around $60k for a used Panamera Turbo. It is a waiting game, because the Panamera prices will drop, but in the meantime you need something that makes you look like a baller. 10k: Two Tone, All Class: 1985 Mercedes 500SEL

The W126 generation Mercedes-Benz was the flagship of the flagships -and its long wheel base version was a favorite of African dictators and American country music stars. If you had cash (or were Cash) the long wheel base version of the W126 was the perfect car for you to drink directly from the bottle while your chauffeur drives you to scout open fields to use for shows or massacres. Live it up like a king in this 1985 Mercedes 500SEL offered for $11,900 here on craigslist, located in Burlingame, CA. Tip from Kaibeezy. Wednesday, November 12, 2014
5k: Sacco The Magnificent: 1990 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL W126

The Mercedes-Benz W126 class was the S-Class sized battleship from Stuttgart and
lasted for a remarkable 12 year production run (1979-1991), a record
since Mercedes started building their flagship mega-sedans in the early
1960s. The W126 was designed by Bruno Sacco who also penned the W126/W140/W220 S-Classes...as well as the R129 SL convertible, W202/W203 C-Class, W124/W210 E-Class, CLK & SLK sports cars, M-Class SUV, and was a part of the design of the W123. His reign as Mercedes-Benz design director lasted from 1975 to 1999, and his absence is clearly seen in the aimless design years of the 2000s. It didn't help that the W211 looked like a Camry, but had the reliability of a Yugo. Its okay, you don't need to buy a wreck from the Daimler-Chrysler era , stick to the W126 and you'll be fine. Find this 1990 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL offered for $3,500 in Oakland, CA via craigslist. Tip from Kaibeezy. Thursday, August 14, 2014
5k: Original Gangsta W126: 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL

The W126 generation Mercedes-Benz was the successor to the W116 S-Class platform. It was released in 1979 with a sleek and aerodynamic body design, and a cornucopia of big inline-6 and V8 engines. It is the last car you'd ever expect to be fun in an autocross...but this video and also this one on youtube make it look awesome. If you are going to buy one, it would be good to find a low mile, original owner example offered in great condition...like this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL offered for $3,900 in Solana Beach, CA via craigslist.

W is for Wanderlust: 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL W126
The English word wanderlust is combination of borrowed German words wandern (to hike) and lust (desire). Wanderlust was first used to describe a feeling of the need to travel, explore and see new things in the early 20th century, but is now used frequently to describe the urge to go on a walkabout. I feel no particularly strong reason to spend all my money on pricey REI hiking gear, but one look at a minty clean long wheelbase W126 Mercedes and suddenly the urge to hit the open highway is strong. Find this 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL W126
offered for $9,950 buy-it-now on ebay, from Auto Park USA located in Stone Park, IL.

Father's Day Special: What Car Would You Pick For Your Dad?

Happy Father's day to all you with kids, or pets that look like you, or both! We thought it would be interesting to ask our readers what they would get their Dad from the automotive world. Before having kids, my father used to drive such classics as an MG TF, 49 Ford, Chevy Vega, but once kids started popping out he changed to things like a sky blue Ford LTD sedan, a Dodge Van and later he discovered the wonderful world of Mercedes diesel sedans. W123s littered my parents driveway many years ago, but his current ride is a W210 E300D that has something nearing 400k miles on the clock. For a replacement, I can't think of anything better than this 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL

3k: Funny Seller: 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL W126
Sometimes a car comes to our attention not because it is a cool car, but because it comes wrapped in a funny advertisement and the invectives/hyperbole/nonsense normally reserved for our review are pre-written in the sellers own words. This particular ad is not only knee-slapping good times, but it is a great car at a fair price too. Find this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL is offered for $2,750 in North Dallas, TX via craigslist. 10k: Seller Submission: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC W126 Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz W126 was a generation of the flagship Sonderklasse or special class built in German from 1979-1993. The W126 was designed to have a better ride, improved handling and reduced fuel consumption over it predecessors. The aerodynamic styling helped with mileage somewhat, but it still takes barrels of crude to push one of these boats around the autobahn. Find this 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC W126 Coupe for sale in Emory, GA for $12,000 via craigslist. Seller submission from Boomer.

15k: One Percenter: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL W126
The Mercedes-Benz W126 class was the predecessor to the S-Class and lasted for a remarkable 12 year production run (1979-1991), a record since Mercedes started building their flagship mega-sedans in the early 1960s. The best one to get was always the flagship long wheel base huge-engine variant and the later models will be better equipped. If you were a one-percenter looking for that Bonfire of the Vanities experience (minus the whole racial tension, jail, poverty, reflection elements) you could do worse than pickup a new W126 S-class in 1991. Find this 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL W126 for sale in Atherton, CA for $15,995 asking price via craigslist. Tip from Kaibeezy.Friday, March 8, 2013
5k: Bruiser Cruiser: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC W126 Euro Trash
The Mercedes-Benz 500SEC was a large luxury coupe based on the S-Class W126 chassis. Back in the day, the Europeans always saved the hottest versions for their local market and the North American bound exports were always de-tuned, catalyzed and fitted with big bumpers. Get a taste of the good stuff with this 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC euro grey-market import for sale in Tiburon, CA for $7900 via craigslist.
