3k: Bargain Motor Werks: 1974 BMW 2002

1k: Bariobahn Cruiser: 1987 Mercedes 190E W201

The Mercedes 190E was the luxury sedan predecessor of the C Class from Daimler-Benz, built in epic quantities (almost 2 million) from 1982-1993.  The entry level luxury cruiser was only available as a 4-door sedan and the only convertible versions you will see are home-built hack-jobs parked in the seedier parts of town.  This isn't a problem for the DT driver with a sense of adventure, a GPS and up-to-date shots.  Find this 1987 Mercedes 190E W201 for sale near downtown San Diego for $900 via craigslist. 10k Flash: Unspecified Alpina: 1997 BMW E36 Touring

The BMW E36 is one of the DT Staff's collective favorite cheap German rear drive cars because it handles amazingly, is cheap, takes well to modifications, is incredibly well balanced, came in a wide variety of configurations and, well...it's cheap! Today's E36 is a bit higher priced than most you'll find these days but for two good reasons: 1) it's an Alpina massaged example and 2) it's a "Touring" wagon. There were four different levels of Alpina E36, but only two available in 1997 and although the seller claims it's an M3 (it isn't), we are likely looking at a B3 3.2. We will rule out the B8 4.6 because it had a V8, which the seller wouldn't likely overlook. The B3 3.2 was an inline-six powered Bahnstormer that developed 265 hp from a 3.2 liter engine and could do 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.0 seconds. Not super fast, but no slouch either. 5k: 1991 Volvo 780 Bertone Turbo; 5-spd Manual Swap

Reader Andy L. sent us an email a few weeks back with a tip to a clean Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe, and started off with the following line: "Dear Staff at Daily Turismo, I think I have found some Scandinavian ground that is yet unexplored by DT." Andy is correct - somehow over the past year we have not featured even one of Volvo's late '80s Italian offspring. The car he tipped us about is gone from craigslist but we've had our eyes on the one below, a 1991 black car that looks to be in the top 90% for condition and has been given a 5-spd manual trans swap. Like the Subaru SVX this was a potentially entertaining 2-door that was only offered with a slushbox auto from the factory, so the manual swap is a welcome change and should be worth a bit more vs. an otherwise stock car to an enthusiast. 2k: Hell Hath No Fury: 1971 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe

Traditionally a "three box" car with a trunk could be classified as either a two or four-door sedan, or a two-door coupe. You might be forgiven for thinking that a four-door coupe is a recent contrivance from the likes of Mercedes, BMW, Aston Martin et al. But Plymouth had a go at their own "Gran Coupe" in 1971 with a pillarless hardtop version of the four-door Fury sedan. The sleek styling is classic Mopar - long, low and wide. 20k: Breadvette!! 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Shooting Brake

The C3 generation Chevrolet Corvette was sold from 1968-1982 as a coupe, T-top and convertible, but never was it offered as a shooting brake/breadvan.  That hasn't stopped blow torch epoxy wielding customizers from creating what could have been the offspring of a C2 Vette and Volvo 1800ES.  Find this 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Shooting Brake for sale in Auburn, CA for $19,500 via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

5k: Minty Turquoise: 1972 Volvo 142E

We've featured our fair share of Volvo 142s over the past year here at DT and for good reason; these early bricks are good looking, simple, robust, and actually fun to drive. Granted they are a bit antiquated compared to their 240 successors, with recirculating ball steering boxes, very basic accommodations and pushrod engines. But with simplicity comes lightness and reliability and the engines in the B18 / B20 family are easily hot rodded into respectable performers. We're talking early V8 power with half the weight. Most 140 series cars have been recycled into Taiwanese laundromats by now but today's Thorsday feature is a minty sharp lookin' strong runner. 5k: Trailer Queen: 1964 Ford Falcon Ranchero

The Ford Ranchero beat the El Camino to the pickup-car market by two years, a handy fact at Ranchero owner's disposal when everyone asks the model year of their "El Camino".  The Ranchero sold in decent numbers for a specialty vehicle, over 500,000 in its 22 years of production (for reference, that is equivalent to 10 months of 1966 Mustang production...) but it has a bit of a reputation of being mullet-driven.  While the mullet is commonly called "Monday morning in the front, Friday night in the back", the Ranchero is "Monday work truck in the back, Friday cruiser in the front."  Find this 1964 Ford Falcon Ranchero for sale in a mobile home park in Watsonville, CA for $4,750 via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

2k: Needs TLC: 1966 MG MGB w/ Ford V6

The MGB was the bigger brother to today's MG Midget, but is still a small car with a fun British attitude. The Midget with V8 power is a monster compared to this featured MGB which is down two cylinders and isn't ready for rock crawling.  However, it would be a much more "balanced" take on a modified Yank-powered Brit (both physically and mentally). 5k: Pity Da Fool: 1984 Dodge Ram Van; A-Team

10k: Only In Detroit: 1961 MG "Monster" Midget V8 Swap

The MG Midget Mk1 was a rebadged version of the Austin Healey Sprite and shared mechanical parts, sheet metal and almost everything except badges.  Both were powered by sub 1-liter BMC A-series engines and could barely keep up with a modern ride-on lawnmower, but they had a certain quirky charm and dedicated following.  The Midget/Sprite were mostly were known for being about the cheapest way to get in a British roadster.  Consider today's feature ride as the cheapest easiest way to get into a British 4X4 roadster.  Find this 1961 MG "Monster" Midget for sale near Detroit in Ann Arbor, MI for $9,600 via craigslist.  Tip from montegoman562 on oppositelock/jalopnik/kinja.

2k: Forgotten Gem: 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 S/R

The North American Escort was Ford's compact replacement to the Pinto, predecessor to the Focus, and has long since been forgotten by anyone who doesn't have wheels on his home.  The European Escort is a fantastic car and earned the praises of pundits and drivers...the American Escort...not so much.  However, in response to the sport compact fads in the late 1990s, Ford Racing teamed up with the Ford Small Vehicles Group to created a limited edition of the Escort ZX2, called the S/R.  Find this 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 S/R for sale in Fairmont, WV for $2,500.

15k: Half Way Rod: 1959 Chevrolet El Camino

The Chevrolet El Camino was introduced in 1959 as a world changing two-door car/pickup, although it was 2 years later to production than the Ford Ranchero.  The El Camino was based on the full sized Chevy platform, specifically the Brookwood 2-door station wagon and offered a combination of car handling and truck hauling.  Find this 1959 Chevrolet El Camino for sale in Euclid, OH currently bidding on ebay for $14,350 with 2 days to go.

The Jeep badged truck called the Forward Control (FC 170) was a cab forward monster developed for military purposes and powered by a variety of Hurricane inline-4, inline-6 and Y-block Ford V8s.  The FC was first produced by Willys and later Kaiser Jeep, but only a limited few of the sweet crew cab M-677 version.  Find this 1964 Jeep FC 170 M-677 with Ford V8 for sale in Eureka, MT currently bidding on ebay for $7,500 reserve-not-met with 3 days to go.

5k: Amalaiseing Condition: 1979 Chrysler Cordoba 300, Low Miles

The seventies malaise era was period of the automotive blight between the rumbling sixties and econobox eighties, best known for giant, low-compression engines, jelly filled shock absorbers and over stuffed seats.  Certainly any fan of malaise era classics should be familiar with the Chrysler Cordoba, if not only for the legendary "pre-Khan" Ricardo Montalbán commercials.  Today the Cordoba is more likely to be the punchline of a joke an object of desire, but that only means the good ones are super cheap.  Find this 1979 Chrysler Cordoba 300 with only 35k miles on the odo for sale in Huntley, IL currently bidding for $1,026 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go.

5k: Like A Big Mini: 1969 Austin America

In the early 1960s Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis was given a project from his bosses at BMC (British Motor Corp) with the internal and thoroughly unsexy name ADO16.  This project would be the basis for a family of larger than the Mini vehicles including the Austin 1100/1300, MG 1100/1300 and Morris 1100/1300. Combined production figures for the entire family made the ADO16 front drive machine one of the best selling vehicles in the UK, and it was exported in decent quantity (60,000 from 1968-1972 according to austinamericausa.com).  Unfortunately the Austin America wasn't well suited to the US style of high-speed freeway driving and earned a reputation for poor quality, rust, and repeated mechanical failures.  Few remain intact, much less on the road today, but one of them is this 1969 Austin America for sale in La Mirada, CA for $3,500 via craigslist.

5k: Seller Submission: 1962 Volkswagen Baja Bug

The Volkswagen Beetle is the best selling car of all times, with over 21 million of the air cooled freeway clogging tweedledee-exahust-note menaces leaving dozens of VW factories around the globe.  Most Beetles have long been cleared from the road due to careless owners, structural rust & accidents caused by miserable handling characteristics, and a precious few remain on the road today (okay, by few we mean..maybe...11 million).  Of those remaining, they typically fall in the buckets of basket case, trailer queen or baja bug, the latter being our preference.  Find this 1962 Volkswagen Baja Bug for sale in Chico, CA for $5,000 via craigslist.  Seller submission from B Slus, who says he is "Selling to help fund my 1969 911e restoration project."

2k: T-65 WonderWagon: 1984 Toyota Van

In the late 1970s Toyota recognized the need to create a small/economical passenger van to compete with the Volkswagen Bus and in 1982 introduced the world to the MasterAce.  The name MasterAce was only used in Japan, but it was called the Space Cruiser (yeah, bitchin) in Europe, the Tarango (funky, but okay) in Australia, but before it could be released in North America, the Toyota's Department of Naming Names was accused of being too outlandish and the entire group committed ritualistic suicide. This left the North American naming to a janitor, who just called it the Toyota Van.  At least the marketing guys hadn't shish kabobed their livers (yet) and they called the higher level trim version the WonderWagon!  Regardless, find this 1984 Toyota Van for sale in Los Angeles, CA for $2100 via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.
