Back when the Vega came out, everyone knew it already needed more of just about everything. The Monza, an evolution thereof, kinda-sorta satisfied that but Chevy really phoned it in. Now with 50% more ‘Merica, the Monza Mirage was an IMSA inspired and dealer affixed package that usually came with a V8 but never failed to deliver in a screaming eagle Amerigasm, half-empty Budweiser-to-the forehead kind of way. The saying goes “Big things come in little packages” and for quite a while small was the only size that came from Japan. In the early 70’s if you drove something small, or from Japan, people might have thought something was wrong with you; then the fuel crisis hit. Maligned for their small cars when the rest of this country drove large land yachts, Honda persevered with their economy cars. While not collectible like European sporting models from the same years, nor as prestigious as a Cadillac or Lincoln, wouldn’t you rather drive something like this 1970 Honda N600 for sale on Craigslist in Farmington (Santa Fe) New Mexico for $5,000 than a newer plastic vehicle? For the save the earth types you can hit them in their holier than thou attitude with a difference in philosophy. Thursday Twister: Coachbuilt Cars

In the early days of the horseless carriage, if you wanted a nice car, you picked your frame/running gear and then found a coachbuilder to make the body.  This was the recipe for expensive cars until the auto manufacturers decided they wanted 100% of the pie and started putting fancy bodies on their frames.  Oddly enough, there are still a few firms around that specialize in coachbuilding (Zagato, Pininfarina, Bertone, to name a few).  The question for our Thursday Twister is: what can you find for sale around the web that was coachbuilt?

Dual Porpoise: 1967 Volvo P210 Duett

The Volvo P110/P210 was a 2-door wagon version of the popular PV444/PV544 sedan, and contrary to popular opinion, it was indeed imported to the USA starting in the late 1950s and through the 1967 model year with the Duett nickname. You don't see many on the road today, but they were available in US Volvo dealers and the P210 version (introduced for the 1961 model year) was available as a Van (two seat commercial truck) and Estate (5 seat wagon).  Find this 1967 Volvo P210 Duett here on eBay bidding for a robust $18,400 located in Rutland, VT with 1 day to go.

Mid Week Match-Up: A Daily For Vance's Lady Friend

Todays Mid Week Match-Up request comes from Vance who writes: So my girlfriend is on car number two for the year, a 2007 Subaru Forester that replaced her 2001 Chrysler Sebring which blew a head gasket back in January. Now the Forester (approx. 110K miles) is showing signs of a bad head gasket, despite her "trustworthy" family mechanic who keeps telling her there is nothing wrong and that she's worrying too much (despite me having towed this car to his shop twice while on the verge of overheating). She really wanted a Subaru and I tried to steer her away from Subarus for this reason. Instead of totaling yet another car, I'd like to find her something more reliable. She really likes small suv's and wagons. I really just need something reliable that will stand up to the Texas heat because I'm tired of trying to put band aids on the gunshot wound that is the bad Subaru head gasket. 4WD/AWD would be a plus. Something in the 5-6k range, 7k at the most.

Does It Run: 1972 Chevrolet Nova

 The term nova, with regards to astronomy, is attributed to the noted Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe who described the phenomenon in his book De Nova Stella (Latin for "Of the New Star").  It is a sudden brightening of a star that occurs in binary star system when one star (usually a white dwarf) pulls a big chunk of hydrogen from the surface of its companion star and a cataclysmic runaway nuclear explosion occurs.  It can't be possible that GM knew the fabulous Corvair would crash/burn while the Nova would run away with the crown as GM's top compact back in the early 60s...but it sure looks that way.  Find this 1972 Chevrolet Nova offered for $6,500 in Rincon, GA via craigslist.  Tip from Fuel Truck.
