Transportapotty or Microbebus: 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) Bus

This next car...errr..bus..comes as a tip from SecondMouse who writes: You don't see these too often anymore. Volkswagens from this era seemed particularly prone to catching the rust bug. When you do see one, it is either in a Woodstock documentary or Jay Leno's car collection. This appears to be a somewhat complete collection of parts roughly fashioned into a 1973 VW Bus, in an undriveable state for less than the cost of a new hairpiece. All it lacks is a balding hippie with a fat wallet and fond memories of their halcyon days in the back of one of these.  Find this 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) Bus offered for $2,500 in Houston, TX via craigslist.

VW Bus Clone: 1992 Suzuki Every

The VW Bus wasn't a huge vehicle, but it certainly wouldn't have qualified for Japan's Kei car laws...but that didn't stop this next customizer from building what should have been a factory thing.  Find this 1992 Suzuki Every offered for $8495 in Atlanta via Seattle Craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Double Mack: 1959 Volkswagen Bus

The original Volkswagen Beetle "People's Car" aircooled rear-drive platform was adapted over the years to just about every possible kind of vehicle, from the people hauling Bus/Van to the off-road ready Thing...but I don't believe VW ever built a semi-truck version. Thankfully, we have hilly billies with welders to fix that mistake.  Find this 1959 Volkswagen Bus here on eBay bidding for $4,088 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go.

Ford V6 Power: 1972 Volkswagen Camper

Something must be in the water, because it isn't often that you'll find a vintage Volkswagen camper for a decent price, It wasn't that long ago that the VW Type 2 was the vehicle of choice for hippies, derelicts, and communists because they were almost free, but finding one for $7,500 is a good deal today.  Find this 1972 Volkswagen Camper offered for $7,500 in North Port, FL via craigslist.  Tip from Dascpcu.

School Bus Tiny House: 1995 Chevrolet Bus

The lady who runs rules my household has been watching those terrible Hallmark romantic Christmas movies non-stop -- you know, the ones where the ever-so-not-attractive female lead meets the handsome-but-aged male lead who is mean to her at the beginning, but then she falls in love once she hears his sad story and nobody gets eaten by zombies or jumps a Dodge Charger over a police car , really abysmal pieces of modern cinema-- so I've been contemplating moving to Antarctica, but maybe I just need an RV in the driveway as a mobile man cave.  Like this 1995 Chevrolet Bus offered for $10,950 in Shepherdstown, WV. Tip from Jeff S.

High Top: 1988 Sven Westfalia VW Camper

5k: Having Another Episode: 1971 Volkswagen Bus

Star Wars fans are currently on edge waiting for the release of the third installment of Star Wars movies, this time produced by Disney and directed by J.J. Abrams.  The original Star Wars trilogy was a masterful work of cinema, but the three more recent movies, directed by George Lucas, can be described at best as filling in the Star Wars narrative, and at worst as Lucas flinging Bantha poop at your childhood memories.  Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were really horrible movies (in a category with the unwatchably mesmerizing Star Wars Holiday Special) so why you would choose to decorate your 1971 Volkswagen Van with images from those abysmal films is completely lost on me.  Find it here on craigslist, located in Los Angeles, CA for $7,900.

5k: Crew Cabtastic: 1978 Volkswagen Bus Custom Transporter

Ever see a car that is oddly well executed, despite how badly it could've turned out given its mission statement?  This next feature could be described at the world's largest crew cab pickup or a shorty bus with a bed...whatever you call it, it came out really well given the humble beginning as a crushed bus.  Find this 1978 Volkswagen Bus Custom Transporter currently bidding for $3,250 reserve-not-met, located in Rapid City, SD via eBay.

5k: Type Too Cheap: 1971 Volkswagen Kombi Type 2

You've heard us complain about the skyrocketing prices of all manner of Volkswagen Type 2 versions about as often as we rave about El Caminoing the planet...but...it isn't for lack of liking the venerable Vanagon.  Quite the opposite, if one can be found for a reasonable price they offer a great amount of usability, frugality and cool in a bread loaf shaped package.  Find this 1971 Volkswagen Bus Type 2 (T2) offered for $5,700 in Sammash, WA via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

1k: 21 Window Miniature: 1963 Volkswagen Bus Scooter

The current craze of everything relating to the Volkswagen Type 2 Bus has been entertaining to watch to say the least.  All but abandoned for scrap a few years ago and inhabited by penniless surfers, the Bus made an epic comeback of a proportion not matched except by this month's resurgence of the Cold War.  Prices for 21 and 23-window Sambas (sounds like a dance you do at a South American state funeral - e.g. "Col. Avarez was honored with the traditional 21 window Samba salute, it took hours to clean up all the glass") have scooted out of the reach of those without proper funds.  Today, we've got the Walmart version of the VW Bus, in more ways than one.  Find this 1963 Volkswagen Bus Scooter for sale in Upland, CA for $2,750 via craigslist.

15k: Kombi Type S: 1978 Volkswagen Bus With Acura V6 Swap

The Volkswagen  Type 2 was a lumbering slowlane clogger known as the Kombi, Transporter, Van, Vanagon, Bus, Microbus and built starting in 1949.  European production ended in the 1980s, but Brazillian production is still going active and scheduled to end on Dec 31, 2013.  The European/US market versions were powered by small boxer-4 cylinder engines and required an alert driver with a heavy foot to keep up with traffic.  Skip all the slowness and pickup a custom restored Type 2 powered by an Acura V6.  Find this 1978 Volkswagen Bus with Acura V6 Power located in Seminole, FL for sale on ebay currently bidding for $10,100 reserve not met with 1 day to go.

5k: Bay Window: 1969 Volkswagen Bus

We've waxed the old surfboard nostalgic about cheap VW Vans in the past and continue to be staggered at the depths of the pockets for modern day collectors of what are some of the worst cars to drive. The VW Van ranks just below an airport shuttle in terms of "fun to drive," but is somehow cool, like an old rocking chair that is uncomfortable and gets splinters in your ass, but your old hippie uncle will never sell it.  Find this 1969 Volkswagen Bus/Van for sale in San Diego, CA for $4,500 via craigslist.

5k: Bustrocity: GM Scenicruiser Bus w/ 1976 GMC Motorhome Title

Not exactly a good daily driver, but certainly an interesting piece of metal, this 1950s Greyhound GM Scenicruiser bus has been re-titled as a 1976 GMC Motorhome and is being sold in Tampa Bay, FL for $5,000 via craigslist.  The PD-4501 Scenicruser was an aluminum sided passenger bus made by GM for Greyhound between 1954 to 1956, but has been stripped from the inside and is now a "blank canvas" according to the sellers. Chances are good that it's still powered by a 9.3 liter Detroit Diesel 8V-71 two stroke supercharged diesel V8 screamer. What would you do with a split level RV? Park it in front of your 1950's split level ranch? Mid Century Modern is, after all, totally "in" right now.

10k: 1966 VW Bus Kombi; Brazilian 16-Window

We really wish we could say that we don't see VW Buses on the road today - because they are slow, smelly, horrible piles of junk- but unfortunately the damn things run forever and today have become collectible to the point that even the worst basket case is saved from the crusher.  This is terrible news as the average vehicle speed on SF Bay Area freeways would increase by 25 mph if all VW Buses were crushed and sent to China to be recycled into Matchbox versions of VW Buses...ironic ain't it!  Even worse news is that a Brazilian (just how many is a Brazilian anyway!) immigrant Type 2 has made its way into our fair land and this 1966 (in title only) VW Bus is now for sale via www.oldbug.com for $9500 USD (R$20,000 Brazilian Reals).
