Uggo but Quicko: 1983 Porsche 944 V8

Was the Volvo with a V6 swap we posted earlier today a bit slow for your liking?  Okay...I get it. How about a Porsche 944 with a small block Chevy, is that fast enough for your inner Dale Earnhardt Jr? Find this 1983 Porsche 944 V8 offered for $6000 in Baltimore, MD via craigslist. From Cory.

Not Stock: 1965 Volvo 122S Amazon

This next ride comes from Zach Z who writes: H, V, A, and C are optional. Just open a window, apparently.  But has MOAR ENGINE. Find this 1965 Volvo 122S Amazon offered for $5000 in Southwest Texas via craigslist.

Brazilian Body VW: 1978 L'Automobile Ventura

I'm sorry, the connect is bad, did you say "batmobile?" No, no, I said I just bought a Latomobile!  A Lactomobile...like a mobile nursing vehicle?  No, a LATOMOBILE -- a fiberglass custom thing based on Vdub mechanicals and built in Brazil, like the Puma or SP2!  Wait...are you talking about the Ventura, built by L'Automobile in São Bernardo do Campo?  Uhhmmm...maybe?  Find this 1978 L'Automobile Ventura offered for $4995 CAD ($3881 USD) in Vancouver, BC via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Not Cliché : 1969 Ford Cortina Mk2

As I write up the posts for today, I've got Mecum Auctions 2018 at Indianapolis on the tele, and it makes for an interesting juxtaposition to the thing looking at me on the screen.  The '65 GTO crossing the block (that sold for $21k) is a nice car...in fact, all of the cars hitting the block at a big name auction are "nice" but they are mostly lacking in character, individuality, or (critically) affordability.  These things are bloody expensive and most are the typical cliché cars you'd find at any Friday night car show, so why not get something like this 1969 Ford Cortina Mk2 offered for $1600 in Corona, CA via craigslist. Tip from Erik.

Not On The Rug Man- 1993 Porsche 968

About two months ago, I was chatting with a friend who works in the same industry as myself at a regional trade show.  His house was under contract for sale and in addition to moving the contents of the house, he only had two weeks to get rid of his Porsche 968 before the closing date.  He had owned the 968 since 1996, but it had sat under a car cover for an undetermined amount of years by the side of the house.  After a couple phone calls to some enabler friends of mine, one offered me up the use his 2wd Chevy truck and car trailer and another (who is a ASE certified tech) volunteered to make the three hour one way trip with me from CT to Wilmington, DE to pick up the car.  The 968 was the final evolution of the 944 and were sold in very limited numbers.  The auto press loved neutral handling, overall balance, and it's giant 3.0 four cylinder engine.  The frog eye pop up headlights are decidedly retro cool in 2018.  This particular car is in rough shape and would be much better served by someone intimately familiar with these water cooled Porsche models.  The values on these have recently been on the rise so it is possible someone with some ambition may want a project or a PCA club racer.  Find this 1993 Porsche 968 for sale in Norwalk, CT for $5,000 via eBay.

Un Piccolo Cammello: 1978 All-Cars Charly Camel

Back when cigarette advertising was everywhere, the guys at Camel decided that lung cancer was taking too long to kill their users, so they launched a three wheeled monstrosity that could murder you with CO2 from the 2-stroke weed-wacker engine, daily rollover events, or the complete lack of safety standards for you and your family (see Charly advert below for proper child placement).  Luckily for you, we've got this 1978 All-Cars Charly Camel offered for $1500 in Ridgecrest, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Jay Dee-ammmmn: 1990 Suzuki Alto Works RS/R

It was going to be hard to beat yesterday's Mitsu Minica Dangan ZZ Minigun Zipzop Frizzle Frazzle Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz, but DT tipper Ryan sent in the following tip with comment: I'll see your ZZ and raise you an Alto Works RS/R.  Well played Ryan...well played.  Find this 1990 Suzuki Alto Works RS/R offered for $6000 in Little Rock, AZ via craigslist.

The Left-Handed Spanner: Car Quiz Solution

This is the solution to the car quiz from the earlier post.

The Left-Handed Spanner: Car Quiz, Part II

This is the backside of the page of the car quiz from the earlier post.

The Left-Handed Spanner: Aquatic Car Quiz

The Left-Handed Spanner, by Kaibeezy.
Never thought I'd go on a cruise, except maybe the HMS Prog. As a proto-hipster (old), East Coast liberal intellectual elitist (snob), who does software things for a living (nerd, geek) and art for fun (artiste; artsy-fartsy), but who nonetheless appreciates 5.7 liter V8 wagons (Roadmaster), Texas barbeque (brisket), ice cold longnecks (Budvar), and other earthy delights (foie gras on Cheez-its, but never brie on a cheese steak), a cruise eventually, finally happened.

Not A Lot Of Lira- 1969 Alfa Romeo Berlina

For years and years, the 105 series based Alfa Romeo Berlina could be bought for next to no money.  These cars are the poor mans substitute for the Giula Super sedan or handsome GTV coupe and share the same basic goodness of the two cars.  The upright styling and acres of glass greenhouse stands out like a sore thumb among most any modern car.  This cars 1750 engine has the reputation for being a bit more rev happy than the later torquier 2000 version of the engine.  Find this 1969 Alfa Romeo Berlina for sale in Reading, PA for budget friendly ask of $3,500 via craigslist.

So Cute: 1992 Mitsubishi Minica Dangan ZZ

The Mitsubishi Minica was a kei car built by Mitsubishi Motors from 1962 through 2011, but you don't see many on this side of the world.  That is a darn shame, but this Dangan ZZ spec'd example will fix your kei-car woes with dose of 660cc engine and turbo power.  Find this 1992 Mitsubishi Minica Dangan ZZ offered for $5000 in Eugene, OR via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Ratish: 1991 Mazda Miata Track Car

It's been said that the Miata is responsible for saving the SCCA among its other achievements in being The Answer To Everything.  I don't know if that is true, but it is a good way to dip your toe into the world of Track Days for not a lot of shekels.  And there are usually at least one or two Miata track rats for sale On Any Sunday in your local craiglist.   Find this 1991 Mazda Miata Track Car for sale in Duval, WA for $6,000 via craigslist.

Call me Ishmael: 1969 Saab 96 V4

The Saab 96 was the final evolution of the original aerospace derived and teardrop shaped Ur-SAAB.  In typical Saab fashion, the 96 continued in production long after its planned replacement (the 99) was released, in fact the 96 continued in production through 1980.  Today the 96 makes a great uncommon alternative to something like the VW Beetle and can be picked up for not a lot of cash. Find this 1969 Saab 96 V4 offered for $7,900 near Denver, CO via craigslist. Tip from Zach Z.

Green With Envy: 1972 Volvo 1800ES

Do you want a car that will put a smile on the face of everybody -- get an old Volkswagen -- Beetle, Van, SomethingBack -- it doesn't matter, people really like 'em.  But they always know what they are looking at, so they'll say hi, but never ask "what is it?" If you want the "what is it" experience, you'll need to dig deep into the abyss of weird cars and get this 1972 Volvo 1800ES offered for $12000 in San Francisco, CA via craigslist. Unusually Good Condition: 1978 Porsche 924

If you are on the hunt for a low buck car that wears the Porsche badge forget about the 911/912 -- the bargains are long gone. Even the prices of the 914 have shot through the roof -- blame the Luftgekühlt crowd for that one...but if you want a cheap Porsche that is cooler than a Boxster (sorry...great cars...not old enough to be "cool" yet...give 'em time!) look for a 924.  Find this 1978 Porsche 924 offered for $4999 in Hammett, ID. Tip from FuelTruck.

Seems Like A Good Deal: 1968 Volvo 122S Amazon

The next car  is located under a car cover at an RV storage lot, so it breaks the advice that you should never buy a car from storage...but this next car appears to have up-to-date license plate stickers and a reasonable asking price. Find this 1968 Volvo 122S Amazon offered for $3000 in San Diego, CA via craigslist.

Don't Call Me Marquis- 2004 Mercury Marauder

The Chevy Caprice SS made quite a statement when it was introduced in 1994.  It was a old school muscle sedan for the 90's that got rid of lot of the chrome styling, fitted steamroller 17" tires, and had a proper V8 drivetrain.  Why I am writing about the Caprice you may ask?  Ford decided to answer the car seven years after the Caprice left the streets for 2003 Mercury Marauder.  The Marauder was a luke warm effort that could get beat at the stop light Grand Prix by a same year Accord V6.  However, there are too many engine mods to count to right that wrong. It seems half of these models you see for sale have been supercharged.  Find this stock 2004 Mercury Marauder for sale in Granby, CT for $3,000 via craigslist.

Seller Submission: 1981 Mercedes-Benz 240D W123

This next car is a 1981 Mercedes-Benz 240D located in NYC that comes as a seller submission from Jeremy who writes: Yes, it has rust in the fenders and bottom of drivers door. Yes, it has some blowby. Yes the clearcoat is peeling, the paint is original, it has a couple inexplicable dents. The glow plugs are 14 years old and probably need to be replaced. It started in 5 degree weather this winter without a block heater.

However, I did a huge amount of preventative maintenance so my ex could take our kid around safely and I did not have to hear about any breakdowns or failures on my behalf. Please review ad for brief summary of work done to make this a reality.

It is a driver, good from 10-15 feet if you squint, depending on the light. But the A/C blows cold, every little thing works on it besides cruise control, which works sometimes, if you are comfortable using a 40 year old manually actuated cruise control. Also the Becker stereo eats tapes or alternately vomits them back out. The AM/FM works beautifully, antenna goes up and down every time. I drove it 350 miles on Saturday morning and it returned 30mpg.
