After Germany's second failed attempt to take over the world in 25 years, the post WWII German industrial machine was saddled with a number of restrictions. Messerschmitt found themselves a warplane company that was not allowed to build warplanes, so they did the next best thing and built tiny three wheeled Kabinenrollers (German for scooter with cabin). The Mini Comtesse Super Coupe was a microcar launched in 1978 by a small French company named Acoma. It was one of those LSD induced 1970s visions of the future, where the future was as much about style as it was about being totally uncomfortable and miserable. There isn't much in common between an R107 SL Benz, Honda S2000 and Fiat 850 Spider, except that they all actually look cooler with a hardtop in place of the folding top. That and they all have 4 wheels. On this Fiat, the hardtop isn't an aftermarket piece that you'll find on something like an S2000, but it was designed by Bertone so it looks sharp. The Nissan Figaro we posted on Monday was admittedly overpriced, especially considering that it is persona non grata for licensing in the state of California for at least 2 more years, and we found a much cheaper example in Vancouver, BC Canada for $7500 CAD. In the late 1980s Nissan launched a series of retro-styled cars was called the Pike series and sold them in Japan at a dealership network called the Nissan Cherry Store. In 1962 BMC (British Motor Corp) launched the development of a new family car under the name ADO16 (Amalgamated Drawing Office project number 16). This ADO16 would be the basis for a family of larger than the Mini vehicles including the Austin 1100/1300, MG 1100/1300, Austin America, Riley 1300, Wolseley 1100/1275/1300 and Morris 1100/1300. Combined production figures for the entire family made the ADO16 front drive machine one of the best selling vehicles in the UK and we've featured versions before including an Austin America.
