British Racing Green: 1967 Sunbeam Alpine

Many car publications/forums say the answer to any car related question is the Mazda Miata.  If the Miata is too mundane and you need something with more savior faire, today's affordable classic Sunbeam Alpine is a good option.  The Alpine model was fitted with a four cylinder engine that put out 90 some odd horsepower so it was not nearly as potent a performer as the Ford V8 fitted Tiger model.  The Series V 1965-1968 Alpine's were the last of these cars and arguably the best looking.  Find this 1967 Sunbeam Alpine for sale in Woodside, CA for $8,999 via craigslist.  Tip from Fuel Truck.

The Europa was a sporty two seater built by Colin Chapman's Lotus Cars in Norfolk, UK.  Only 9300 of these high-butted gems were built between 1966-1975 and in today's world of overpriced junk (see Porsche 912 prices...ahem) the Europa is still surprisingly affordable as long as you avoid over priced examples for sale on various interweb auction sites. Bow Chicka Wow Wow: 1988 Pontiac Fiero Northstar Swap

Risque' Business: 1984 Porsche 928S Euro

Back in the 1970's through the early 1990's euro cars from the motherland were often fitted with more powerful engines than their USA exports.  Euro 1982-1984 Porsche 928S's were conservatively rated at 310hp (published reports were more like 330hp) versus 240 hp engine for the USA spec engine.  The most obvious way to spot a euro 928 is to look for the rear mounted fog light to the left of the license plate.  The 928 engine has the distinction of having the longest timing belt fitted on any car production engine.  Find this 1984 Porsche 928S for sale in La Crosse, MN for $10,500 via craigslist.  Tip from MB.

It doesn't take much to be faster on the road than a Mercedes-Benz 240D with a slushbox automatic transmission...but an easy upgrade from danger zone slow to moderately livable matching your 62 horsepower oil furnace with a 4-speed manual box.  I've driven both versions for many miles and can say that the 4-speed manual feels as fast as the 300D with the slushbox...and that isn't as bad as it sounds. Amazon Prime Day: 1967 Volvo Amazon 123GT

When the talking heads on the internet starting carrying on about Amazon Prime day, I had to think about it.  Because the regular 122S version of the Amazon isn't prime...but then I remembered the 123GT version...which is ALMOST prime, but it is divisible by 3 & 41, which are both prime numbers and in nerd speak we call it semi-prime or biprime.  Anyway, I don't need any worthless electronic devices littering my house and listening to my private conversations (how long before the thought police start to use Alexa/Siri to find non conformists and turn them into Soilent Green...huh?  10 years? 20 -- whoa, who let Vince off his meds...quick distract him with some Saab Inca alloys and hit him with an injection of fluoride...aggggg...we now return to our regular programming), but I do need a classic Volvo. Nice Bumpers: 1985 BMW 325e Euro

Not too many years ago, you could pick up a clean BMW E30 for reasonable money.  It is a completely different market for these cars in 2018.  Nice condition plastic bumper cars are very difficult to find under ten grand.  Today's feature is a interesting euro import that could be a really nice car with a little handiwork and ingenuity.  It is equipped with the low revving diesel-esque 2.7 "eta" inline 6 engine.  All is not lost because the hot-rod solution is to fit an "i" engine cylinder head onto the "eta" block to create a 2.7 stroker.  The "i" cylinder heads are plentiful and not overly pricey.  Without proof of it being done, you should change out the timing belt and water pump on on these engines right away so this would not be a ton more extra work.  Find this 1985 BMW 325e for sale in West Haven, CT for $4,000 via craigslist.

The Porsche 924 was first released in 1976 as an example of what a simple engine and light chassis can achieve together. Unfortunately, a decent quantity of negative press has been heaped on the Audi van/sedan engine used to power the lithe little coupe...but in 1979 Porsche was kind enough to introduce a turbocharged version with a few more ponies and a sweet NACA duct on the hood for extra emphasis.  Think of it as the automotive styling equivalent of an exclamation point.  924.  924 Turbo! The BMW 5-series lineup in 1988 was filled with a variety of choices starting with the movie star spec M5 then moving to the real estate investor's 535i and finally the professor's 528e.  This next example isn't just another 528e, because it is equipped with a 5-speed, has nice paint, and a reasonable asking price. Alfa Romeo Jigsaw Puzzle- Two Milano's and 164

Crown Vic Swap: 1972 Ford F100

It is entirely possible to swap an entire Ford F100 body onto a late model Ford Crown Victoria frame, such that you end up with a car that looks like a classic Ford pickup, but drives like a P71 interceptor, which isn't much better than a classic pickup, but rack-n-pinion and fuel injected V8 is just a seriously complex body-frame swap away...OR you could buy one that is already done. Ultimate Cheapskate Machine: 1983 BMW 320i

The E21 3-series is the middle child stuck between two BMW icons: 2002 and E30.  The 320i was not a fast car when new and could be considered painfully slow by 2018 standards.  The good news is that there are still sane asking prices out there for these unlike the newer E30. In addition, the 320i's have unmistakable vintage BMW styling that is arguably more handsome than a E30.
