V8 Mid Engine Custom: 1966 Chevrolet Corvair

The Chevrolet Corvair was a world changing car when introduced in 1960.  Its combination of subtle styling, aircooled alloy flat-6 out back and unibody construction was a fantastic machine that was the unfortunate recipient of the attention of a savvy young lawyer/politician named Ralph Nader who needed to make a name for himself.  But if a stock Corvair caused Mr Nader to write a book and then sue GM, then this next modified mid-engine V8 Corvair would have caused him to crapped his pants and run screaming for mommy. Find this 1966 Chevrolet Corvair offered for $10,000 in Fountain Hills, AZ via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Bow Chicka Wow Wow: 1988 Pontiac Fiero Northstar Swap

Many engine and body swapped Fiero's have graced the pages of DT.  What is it about the Fiero that gives off the Rodney Dangerfield no respect persona?  For starters, the highest level 2.8 60 HO V6 was fine in the 1980's, but hardly cuts the mustard by 2018 standards.  The final year 1988 cars are most desirable cars as the final year brought a much improved suspension design and cleaner aesthetics.  Today's feature is without a Italian body conversion, is in pristine condition, has a 300hp Cadillac Northstar engine, and is up for sale at less than half of the build cost.  Find this 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT for sale in place, NM for $10,000 via craigslist.  Tip from Fuel Truck.

Three.Four V-Six: 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT

Legend has it that GM copied (or hired) Lotus for the suspension re-design of the last year of Fiero production, but the truth is a smidge less exciting.  However, knowledgeable sources claim that the new suspension design for 1988 was something the gearheads at Pontiac wanted all along before they were strong-armed by weakknee'd bean counters into using suspension borrowed from the Chevy Citation (barf!).  Find this 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT offered for $3,650 in Melba, ID via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Mid Engine V8: 1954 Hudson Hornet Custom

America.  The United States.  These United States.  Land of the free.  Home of the brave.  I don't know what else to say, except that no other country in the world would inspire someone to build a mid engine V8 powered '54 Hudson, much less permit him to drive it on public roads.  Try that in Switzerland.  Find this 1954 Hudson Custom offered for $16,000 in Sylvania (home of the world's largest factory for grey light bulbs) via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Affordable Mid Engine: 1974 Fiat X1/9 Bertone

by Brian -- The Fiat X 1/9 was the first affordable mid-engine sports car for the masses. It has all of the looks of a Ferrari or a Lamborghini but at a much cheaper price, and with a removable top. The X 1/9 was produced from 1972-1989, but we did not see the X until 1974. The first X’s are highly desirable, and arguably look the best of all of the US market cars. This 1974 model looks to be a solid low mileage car that needs a little TLC. This 1974 Fiat X1/9 Bertone is available in Oroville, Oregon on Portland Craigslist for a mere $3000.

3400 V6 Power: 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT V6

Long before Pontiac was neutered and left out to die in the 2008 carpocalypse, it was one of the brighter facets of GM's global portfolio.  The glory days included the 1964 GTO, which gave birth to the 60s muscle car formula by sticking a huge engine in a plain Jane mid-sized chassis, and the last gasp of Pontiac brilliance (before it was turned into a badge-engineering factory) was a little 2-seat thing called the Fiero.  Find this 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT V6 offered for $3,500 CAD ($2678 USD) in Vancouver, BC via craigslist.

Thursday Twister: Mid Engine

Welcome to another edition of DT's Thursday Twister, the game where the referee wears solid and the players wear stripes.  This week, we are looking for cars that have the entire engine located between the centerline of the axles (front & rear).
