The Ford Fairmont (and its badge engineered cousin, the Mercury Zephyr) was a Fox-body based large compact (or small mid-sized) sedan that superseded the Maverick in 1978 and survived until it was replaced with the terminally terrible Tempo in 1984. The Fairmont isn't something you'd expect rich guys to buy under the air conditioned tents at a Barrett-Jackson auction, but this next one will be able to embarrass the stock C4 Corvette they just bought for too much money. Commenter RyanM and regular contributor Kaibeezy were onto something when they posted a curated list of finds off their local Craigslist. Here in the Northwest we seem to have nearly as many elderly Italian cars as the Bay Area. I attribute it to the Boeing effect still echo-ing around the area (the software industry nouveau riche prefer brand new stuff). Plus, even though it rains here most of the time, we don't use salt and its more of a drizzle for days vs. heavy rain (come visit, but don't move here), so the Italian stuff hasn't rusted in half. The 1981 revival of the Imperial name came from Chrysler's CEO and Dark Lord Lee Iacocca, who launched the J-body based car as a personal luxury coupe. Rumor has it that Iacocca was friends with Frank Sinatra, and it didn't take more than a few fistfuls of cash to have Ol' Blue Eyes shill for the Pentastar brand. The best thing to come out of this oddball relationship was the Imperial Frank Sinatra Edition, which was only offered in Glacier Blue Crystal color (Frank's eye color) and some 271 examples left the factory with a lowercase fs on the back. If we're talking two-stroke street bikes, it's inevitable that the Kawasaki H2 will come up. The H2 Mach IV 750, a.k.a the "Widow Maker" was Kawasaki's entry into the 750cc big bike derby in the early 70's. Think of the other bike makers with their 4 stokes and liquid cooling as Fleetwood Mac. Kawasaki with their air-cooled 750cc two stroke triple with 74 brake, was like the Ramones to their safe, pop-rock. In the mid 1980s, a few Montreal based car dudes sat down over a plate of piping hot poutine and decided they could improve the basic Honda Civic with a futuristic restyle. According to the January 1985 edition of Popular Mechanics, Paul Deutchman & Kell Warshaw wanted to create an advanced taxi for the city of Montreal, but when that project stalled, they did what every automotive designer would do and created a kit car using the '74-79 Honda Civic as a donor. The W211 generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class was built starting in 2002, right in the middle of the whole Daimler-Chrysler mess, so you would be correct to be wary. However, the E-Class was always the bread & butter of the Mercedes lineup and didn't get the same cheapen-till-they-buy approach of the lowly C-Class, nor the needless complexity-for-the-sake-of-it mass approach taken on the S-Class, so you might be able to drive a W211 around for a few years without refinancing your house to pay for maintenance.
