Red Stripper: 1991 Honda Civic DX

It was big news when Honda released a hatchback version of the 2017 Civic.  The hatchback body style has not been available over here since 2005.  The fourth generation Civic was a available from 1987-1991 as a sedan, coupe, hatchback, wagon, and a two seat CRX.  The DX was the no frills model that this unfancy list of optional equipment: power steering, rear wash/wipe, clock, passenger door mirror, wheel covers, and auto transmission.  What the Civic lacked in luxury features it made up for in driving fun and fuel economy.  The 92 horsepower4 cyl SOHC engine only had 2165 lbs to haul around.  Find this 1991 Honda Civic hatch for sale in Westport, CT for $1,750 via craigslist.

Long Wheelbase Oddball: 1966 Volkswagen Boonie Bus

You all know that I've complained recently about people who post pictures of photos in a craigslist advertisement...but you also know that I love bizarro world kit-cars offered for rock bottom prices...what a conundrum.  Find this 1966 Volkswagen Boonie Bus offered for $5,000 in Marion, IN via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Going Postal: 2000 Saturn SWP RHD

When someone mentions driving an ex-Postal vehicle, most of us immediately picture one of those boxy Grumman LLVs, but many other vehicles have been conscripted for use in snow, heat, and the gloom of night.  Find this 2000 Saturn SWP RHD offered for $3,000 in Centuria, WI via craigslist.  Tip from MB.

Scrum Master-san: 1991 Autozam Scrum Truck

Back in the go-go 80's, Japan's economy and its car makers were flying high.  Established automakers introduced new brands to the home islands.  Mazda introduced the Autozam brand, mainly to sell Kei cars.  Find this 1991 Autozam (Mazda) Scrum Truck for sale in Clackamas, OR for $5,800 via craigslist.

Corvette Guts: 1964 Kellison J-6 Panther

I've never been a big fan of listings with only one photo the car in question, particularly if that image is a picture of an old print photo and the seller describes the car as "looks better now".  If you can take and digitize a picture of the old photo...why not just take a picture of the car...? However...when the price is right, we can forgive some bad pictures. Find this 1964 Kellison J-6 Panther offered for $16,000 in Albuquerque, NM via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Coffee Brake: Return of the Left Handed Spanner

The Left-Handed Spanner is a special feature column written by DT contributor Kaibeezy. Yesterday, I cooked up a pot of British greens (close as I can get to collards) on an induction hotplate I had picked up to pinch hit while we're waiting for our new cooker (stove) to be connected. You are probably aware these create a strong electromagnetic field that excites the iron atoms in the pan directly, rather than heating them indirectly via conduction from a hot surface or flame.

East Eats West: 2007 Lexus LS460L

For decades the best European Q-Ships built came from a company called Mercedes-Benz.  If you wanted something that could hit Warp 10 by the time you finished saying engage or do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs, you got a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or whatever they were calling it at the time...but times...they have changed. Today, if you want the best European Q-Ship on the planet, you head to your local Lexus dealer and pickup a car built in Japan...or get a used one for eurocents on your yen.  Find this 2007 Lexus LS460L offered for $12,000 in Rio Rancho, NM via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Cat On A Pole: 1979 Volkswagen Iltis

The Volkswagen Iltis was a military light Jeep style thing built for German defence forces from 1978 through 1988.  It was the successor to the Kubelwagen and yet another car-based thing to replace the failed Europa Jeep project.  Find this 1979 Volkswagen Iltis here on eBay bidding for $6,300 reserve-not-met located in San Diego, CA.

Thursday Twister: A Swap Too Far?

Is there anything sacred left in this world?  First, the Spice Girls fragment into a few less-than-stellar individual acts, and now somebody swapped a Mopar 340 V8 into a convertible '73 Mustang (tip from Rock On!)?  For today's Thursday Twister, I'd like to ask you when has a swap gone too far.

Auction Watch: 1973 Opel Commodore

Find this 1973 Opel Commodore here on eBay bidding for $3,650 reserve-not-met with 3 days to go, located in Pompano Beach, FL. Tip from JB1025.

Strange Money Pit: 1992 Chevrolet Lumina Z34

Yeah, yeah, I get it.  A seat for every car and a car for every seat.  De gustibus non est disputandum.  Et cetera.  But seriously?  A Lumina?  Did somebody drop 25 large on restoring a Lumina?  Find this 1992 Chevrolet Lumina Z34 here on eBay offered for $7,500 in Longwood, FL.

Edd China: The Hero We Don't Deserve

It is with some degree of sadness that we report that Edd China is leaving Wheeler Dealers -- and if you listen to (or read) his video, you will find it is related to Velocity's decision to replace Attaboy TV with an American studio in California -- Edd's words:

Unfortunately, on Velocity’s first attempt at producing the show they found Wheeler Dealers ‘too difficult to make’, ‘at least in its current format’. In particular, the detailed and in depth coverage of my fixes in the workshop; what I consider to be the backbone and USP of the programme, are something Velocity feel should be reduced. The workshop jobs are certainly the hardest part of the show to make and reducing their substance and role in the show will save the production considerable time, effort and therefore money. However, this new direction is not something I am comfortable with as I feel the corners I was being asked to cut compromised the quality of my work and would erode my integrity as well as that of the show, so I have come to the conclusion that my only option is to let Velocity get on with it, without me.

Early Thorsday: 1968 Volvo 122S Amazon Wagon

Do you want a car that will put a smile on your face and the face of every other driver on the road around you?  Don't get a new Mazda (although those do have some grin inducing faces nowadays) but instead you should drive an old Volvo, because even if you get cut off with a moronic 4 lane change you can't be mad at a vintage Amazon.  Find this 1968 Volvo 122S Amazon Wagon offered here on eBay bidding for $5,600 reserve-not-met or buy-it-now of $7,950 located in Albuquerque, NM.  Tip from Zach Z.

Mid Week Match-Up: Hatch For Ray

Todays Mid Week Match-Up request comes from Ray from prizmgsi.com and Hooniverse - and he needs an SUV/Wagonish/Hatchy thing for commuting, etc: Take it away Ray:

I recently was able to acquire my high school dream car - a sweet, nicely preserved '92 Geo Prizm GSi. With this addition, we now have three cars in our two-car driveway and with just my wife and myself as licensed drivers, while that is awesome, it's also kinda silly. So we are looking at consolidating.

Currently in addition to the GSi, we have my wife's 2008 Mazda3 2.3l and my 2005 Ford Escape with the same 4 cylinder - easy swap in case one of the engines grenades. Ideally, a replacement would take the best qualities of the two, but generally the following: (1)reliable - we live in a small town without too many repair shop options. I have limited resources for fixing - small jobs are not a big deal, but I'm not swapping out a transmission here; (2)not huge, reasonable mpg- but not deciding factor as we don't drive a ton; (3)some sort of cool factor - wife doesn't want to be just another crossover or SUV in the pre-school pick up line; (4)flexible interior space - we've got one kid, 5 years old now, and we pack pretty light, but there are somewhat frequent Home Depot runs; (5)hatchbacks or wagons preferred, but interesting options considered. Budget is around $10-12k. Auto transmission is preferred but not necessary. We are located in the Pacific Northwest - fly and drives are possible, but may end up in divorce, so choose wisely (mostly an internal monologue there). Do your worst/best!

DT E-i-C Vince: I think that this 2009 Audi A3 2.0T  here on eBay offered for $10,625 buy-it-now located in Los Angeles, CA is an interesting alternative to the VW Golf and Focus hatch that might be your first choice.  The Audi is a few years older, but offers something more interesting for your cash.

What do you guys think Ray should get?  Comments below.

Das Pony: 1984 Mercury Capri RS

The Mercury Capri followed the career arc of any modern pop diva singing prodigy -- think Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, or Miley Cyrus.  A cute and compact version (1970-1977 German Ford) for the first few years gives way to a meatier and more aggressive second generation (1979-1986 Fox Body) followed by a complete and total disaster (1991-1994 Mazda front-drive convertible). Stick to the middle years before the breakdown to shaved head insanity...like this 1984 Mercury Capri RS  here on eBay bidding for $4,995 reserve-not-met with $7,395 buy-it-now located in Torrance, CA.

Must Seeeee: 1971 Volkswagen Beetle V8

I can't agree more that when the seller says this car is a "Must seeeeeeeeee" because I'm having a hard time justifying the images on the pages with what I know about Volkswagen Beetles.  Just how does a Chevrolet V8 fit under the front hood and how does power get to what rear end...it's like I've just seen a picture of a blimp and you tell me its a submarine.  Find this 1971 Volkswagen Beetle V8 offered for an undisclosed price in Thousand Oaks, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Sean S.

King Bee: 1969 Chevrolet Kingswood Wagon

Whenever I see an AMG'd Mercedes SUV or an M'd BMW SUV, I think "Why would you buy such a thing, think of the cool CARS you could have bought instead? (although they are probably leasing it)".  I wonder if 40 or 50 years ago, petrolheads thought the same thing when a big block station wagon rumbled by...  Find this 1969 Chevrolet Kingswood Wagon for sale in Puyallup, WA for $8,000 via craigslist.

HOT Rod! 1921 Ford Model T Bucket Rod

In the world of hot rods there are hot rods and then there are HOT rods, and this next one falls straight into the custom rod world of Munster Koaches and insane customs.  Find this 1921 Ford Model T Bucket Rod offered for $13,500 in Texas City, TX via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!
