10k: More Thunder, Less Chicken: 1980 Pontiac Firebird with LS1

The second generation Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1970 with a handful of firebreathing V8s, but things got ugly when the fuel crisis and emissions regulations started crushing the fun out of automobiles in the mid '70s.  By 1977 the once great T/A 6.6 liter 400 now put out a meager 200 horsepower and Pontiac had resorted to huge hood graphics as a substitute for wasted displacement under the hood.  This isn't the case with today's feature because its been given a new life with a fuel injected LS1 V8.  Find this 1980 Pontiac Firebird with LS1 V8 for sale in Pittsburgh, PA for $9,500 via craigslist.

After yesterday's rare Dutch treat, an E28 Schulz Tuning Touring, time to take a look at a much more common, attainable and modern take on a shift-your-own BMW wagon. The E46 was basically an evolution of the seminal E36 3-series. With added complexity and potential for expensive failure they are also more modern, lightweight and stiffer than their predecessors. E46 values are now down to dirt-cheap levels and present a compelling alternative to the budget 3-series shopper. Especially since the "Touring" wagon version was sold new in North America, unlike its blockier E36 ancestor. The MG Midget was an inexpensive two seater powered by a 1.3 liter engine but offering excellent handling and a go-kart seating position.  This minty clean 1973 MG Midget popped up on our radar and we were admiring the paint, when we realized it was from DT regular contributor Oprah85.  It is located in Mission Hills, CA and currently bidding on ebay for $1,525 no-reserve with 5 days to go. 

10k: Most Interesting Man In The World: 1972 Porsche 914 1.7L

Doug Malewicki has done lots of cool, weird, awesome stuff.  He built the Robosaurus.  He invented the Malewicki equations for model rocket flight projections.  He has worked on the Apollo moon lander, stealth bomber, and DARPA UAVs.   He was the inventor of Nuclear War...well not actual worldwide thermonuclear annihilation, but a board game under the same name.  The subject of today's feature is Porsche 914 that he purchased new in 1972 and has driven for 431k miles, given it 3 paint jobs, and has 40 years of receipts detailing everything about the car.  Find this 1972 Porsche 914 1.7L for sale in Irvine, CA currently bidding on ebay for $4,300 with 4 days to go.  We saw the ad on ebay and were so impressed that we contacted Mr Malewicki directly and are using some of his photos with his permission.  This article was also republished on the front page of Jalopnik.com via our kinja acct.

15k: Dutch Touring: 1987 BMW 535i Touring Wagon E28 5-spd

The E28 generation 5-series wagon never crossed the Atlantic to be sold in the USA, but a few wagons (most with manual transmission) were sold all in Europe, reportedly the work of an aftermarket company.  The result is that a combination of fuel tax costs, classic car registration costs and insurance costs all lead to an interesting market for cars that we (in the USA) would call rare. For example, this 1987 BMW 535i Touring is for sale in the Netherlands for €12.500,00 ($16,500 USD) via marktplaats.nl. 

2k: P For Project: 1962 Volvo P1800

The original P1800 was built from 1960-1962 by Jensen in the UK, and while many folks call every 1800 a P1800, the early cars are the only ones to actually carry the P designation.  Find this 1962 Volvo P1800 in Atlanta, GA for $2,250 via craigslist.  This Thorsday special is a great starting point for a DT reader on a budget who wants to start an 1800 build.

The Chevy Corvair was a rear-engined flat-6 powered sedan from the General, and we've seen a few with Porsche flat-6 power.  The Porsche 914 was a mid-engined car (crankshaft rotates in reverse from the rear engine cars) and we've also seen plenty of 911 powered 914s (some from the factory), but never before a Corvair powered 914.  Find this 1972 Porsche 914 with 6 cylinder Covair power for sale in La Grange, CA currently bidding on ebay for $510 with 8 days to go.

5k: California Isn't Canada: 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster

For some reason this car, located in Sacramento CA, is being sold via ebay.ca.  Someone needs to tell the seller that ca in this case is short for Canada, not California, eh.Whatever the reason (maybe he likes nice buyers?) the car itself looks great in the photos with an aluminum radiator, cool wheels, and clean condition inside & out. But the description is lacking and the end result is low bids. Not good for the seller, but certainly good for a savvy buyer who knows his way around Datsuns.  Find this 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster currently bidding on ebay.ca for $4,001 USD, but located in Sacramento, California.

5k: Hoffa Hauler: 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham

James "Jimmy" Hoffa was a labor organizer turned mobster (or was it the other way around?) who disappeared mysteriously in 1975.  For the past 38 years police have been digging up yards in search of Hoffa's remains, but in 2001 Police matched DNA samples from Hoffa's hair brush with a strand found in the back of Charles "Chuckie" O'Brien's 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham.  Today's feature isn't Chuckie's actual car, but it does do a pretty good impression.  Find this 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham for sale in Asheville, NC for $5,900 buy-it-now on ebay.

5k Flash: 1972 Datsun 1200 Survivor

The B110 Series Nissan Sunny was sold as the Datsun 1200 in the US from 1970-1976.  It was powered by a 1.2 liter inline-4 cylinder engine with a manual gearbox mated to the rear wheels.  This one has had a 5-speed swapped in place of the stock 4-speed trans and looks to be in great shape for the price.  Find this 1972 Datsun 1200 for sale in San Jose, CA for $5495 via craigslist.  Thanks to Jeffrey L. for the tip.
