The Mercedes-Benz R107 was introduced in 1971 as a 2-seat soft-top roadster (with optional hard-top) and relied heavily on chassis components borrowed from the W114 E-Class and engines from the W116 S-Class. The iconic shape of the R107 lasted for an incredibly long 18 years of production and was finally replaced in 1989 by the smoother but less cool looking R129. Find this 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL with GM LT1 V8 swap for sale in Evansville, IN currently bidding on ebay for $1,131 reserve-not-met with buy-it-now of $10,500. 10k: More Thunder, Less Chicken: 1980 Pontiac Firebird with LS1
The second generation Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1970 with a handful of firebreathing V8s, but things got ugly when the fuel crisis and emissions regulations started crushing the fun out of automobiles in the mid '70s. By 1977 the once great T/A 6.6 liter 400 now put out a meager 200 horsepower and Pontiac had resorted to huge hood graphics as a substitute for wasted displacement under the hood. This isn't the case with today's feature because its been given a new life with a fuel injected LS1 V8. Find this 1980 Pontiac Firebird with LS1 V8 for sale in Pittsburgh, PA for $9,500 via craigslist.5k: Shifty Estate: 2000 BMW 323iT Wagon; 5-spd Manual Conversion
After yesterday's rare Dutch treat, an E28 Schulz Tuning Touring, time to take a look at a much more common, attainable and modern take on a shift-your-own BMW wagon. The E46 was basically an evolution of the seminal E36 3-series. With added complexity and potential for expensive failure they are also more modern, lightweight and stiffer than their predecessors. E46 values are now down to dirt-cheap levels and present a compelling alternative to the budget 3-series shopper. Especially since the "Touring" wagon version was sold new in North America, unlike its blockier E36 ancestor. Find this 2000 BMW 323iT with 5-spd manual conversion here on bimmerforums.com, available in Leicester, MA for just $4250 or best offer. Big thanks to Frederic D. for the tip!5k Flash: Small Fry: 1973 MG Midget
The MG Midget was an inexpensive two seater powered by a 1.3 liter engine but offering excellent handling and a go-kart seating position. This minty clean 1973 MG Midget popped up on our radar and we were admiring the paint, when we realized it was from DT regular contributor Oprah85. It is located in Mission Hills, CA and currently bidding on ebay for $1,525 no-reserve with 5 days to go.
10k: Most Interesting Man In The World: 1972 Porsche 914 1.7L
Doug Malewicki has done lots of cool, weird, awesome stuff. He built the Robosaurus. He invented the Malewicki equations for model rocket flight projections. He has worked on the Apollo moon lander, stealth bomber, and DARPA UAVs. He was the inventor of Nuclear War...well not actual worldwide thermonuclear annihilation, but a board game under the same name. The subject of today's feature is Porsche 914 that he purchased new in 1972 and has driven for 431k miles, given it 3 paint jobs, and has 40 years of receipts detailing everything about the car. Find this 1972 Porsche 914 1.7L for sale in Irvine, CA currently bidding on ebay for $4,300 with 4 days to go. We saw the ad on ebay and were so impressed that we contacted Mr Malewicki directly and are using some of his photos with his permission. 15k: Dutch Touring: 1987 BMW 535i Touring Wagon E28 5-spd
The E28 generation 5-series wagon never crossed the Atlantic to be sold in the USA, but a few wagons (most with manual transmission) were sold all in Europe, reportedly the work of an aftermarket company. The result is that a combination of fuel tax costs, classic car registration costs and insurance costs all lead to an interesting market for cars that we (in the USA) would call rare. For example, this 1987 BMW 535i Touring is for sale in the Netherlands for €12.500,00 ($16,500 USD) via marktplaats.nl. 2k: P For Project: 1962 Volvo P1800
The original P1800 was built from 1960-1962 by Jensen in the UK, and while many folks call every 1800 a P1800, the early cars are the only ones to actually carry the P designation. Find this 1962 Volvo P1800 in Atlanta, GA for $2,250 via craigslist. This Thorsday special is a great starting point for a DT reader on a budget who wants to start an 1800 build. 1k: Porvair: 1972 Porsche 914-6; Corvair Power
The Chevy Corvair was a rear-engined flat-6 powered sedan from the General, and we've seen a few with Porsche flat-6 power. The Porsche 914 was a mid-engined car (crankshaft rotates in reverse from the rear engine cars) and we've also seen plenty of 911 powered 914s (some from the factory), but never before a Corvair powered 914. Find this 1972 Porsche 914 with 6 cylinder Covair power for sale in La Grange, CA currently bidding on ebay for $510 with 8 days to go.Wednesday, June 19, 2013
5k: California Isn't Canada: 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster
For some reason this car, located in Sacramento CA, is being sold via ebay.ca. Someone needs to tell the seller that ca in this case is short for Canada, not California, eh.Whatever the reason (maybe he likes nice buyers?) the car itself looks great in the photos with an aluminum radiator, cool wheels, and clean condition inside & out. But the description is lacking and the end result is low bids. Not good for the seller, but certainly good for a savvy buyer who knows his way around Datsuns. Find this 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster currently bidding on ebay.ca for $4,001 USD, but located in Sacramento, California.
5k: Hoffa Hauler: 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham
James "Jimmy" Hoffa was a labor organizer turned mobster (or was it the other way around?) who disappeared mysteriously in 1975. For the past 38 years police have been digging up yards in search of Hoffa's remains, but in 2001 Police matched DNA samples from Hoffa's hair brush with a strand found in the back of Charles "Chuckie" O'Brien's 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham. Today's feature isn't Chuckie's actual car, but it does do a pretty good impression. Find this 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham for sale in Asheville, NC for $5,900 buy-it-now on ebay.Guest Post: MoneySuperMarket.com: Driverless Cars, The Future Of Motoring
10k: Morris Monster: 1951 MG TD w/Volvo B18 and Disc Brakes
How can we possibly explain a Thorsday badge on an MG Feature? First
imagine yourself as a member of the automotive upper class of a
bygone era. You've just selected a Mulliner Coachworks body for
your Rolls Royce Chassis and drive train. Too Much? Step it down a
notch, how about shopping for your car's coachwork at London's world
famous Harrod's deprtment store then traipsing across town to find
your drivetrain at an IKEA. Save the former for later and the
latter for today because this 1951
MG TD with Volvo B18 inline-4 and 4-wheel disc brakes is for
sale in Chatsworth, CA currently bidding on eBay for $8,100

10k: Gov't Auction: 1968 Chevy Camaro DARE Drag Car
Car shows and drag events across the country almost always feature some sort of Police car covered in "DARE to keep kids off drugs" stickers. We've never seen one for sale before but this one is currently bidding at a very fair price. Find this 1968 Chevy Camaro DARE drag car for sale in Spotsylvania, VA currently bidding at $10,520 with 6 days to go via the govdeals.com website. Lots more pictures on their site.1k: Twizzler: 1971 Volvo 142E Convertible
Automobile manufacturers spend millions of dollars and thousands of engineering hours to create convertible versions of fixed roof cars and it typically results in a heavier drop top because of all the additional under body reinforcement to create a properly rigid chassis. However, sometimes a DIY car customizer will throw caution to the wind and convertibilize a coupe with nothing more than a hacksaw, welder and beer. The result is open-air motoring with the chassis rigidity of a car made from twizzlers. Find this 1971 Volvo 142 E 'vert for sale in Duvall, WA currently bidding on ebay for $430 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go. Tip from Scot!15k: Mom's Apple Pie: 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint RestoMod
People use the expression "a slice of Americana" to describe something that is uniquely American in character, like a warm apple pie freshly baked by Mom. What makes a good apple pie? A crispy and rich crust filled with tart apples and gelatinous filling, but it isn't something easily replicated in a factory or at a store and the best are still home made. A restomod classic is similar to the apple pie in that the best take years to get correct and the end product can be extremely rewarding. Find this 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint restomod for sale in Winchendon, MA currently bidding on ebay for $15,887 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go.Monday, June 17, 2013
5k Flash: 1972 Datsun 1200 Survivor
The B110 Series Nissan Sunny was sold as the Datsun 1200 in the US from 1970-1976. It was powered by a 1.2 liter inline-4 cylinder engine with a manual gearbox mated to the rear wheels. This one has had a 5-speed swapped in place of the stock 4-speed trans and looks to be in great shape for the price. Find this 1972 Datsun 1200 for sale in San Jose, CA for $5495 via craigslist. Thanks to Jeffrey L. for the tip.
5k: Chicken Tax Evader: 1986 Subaru BRAT
In 1977 Subaru introduced an El Camino version of its Leone family sedan and called it the Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter or BRAT. The BRAT featured a set of rear facing plastic jump seats to avoid the so called Chicken Tax, which is actually a US Tariff on light trucks that originally started when France and Germany levied a tax on US Chicken exports, but that is a story for another time. Find this 1986 Subaru BRAT for sale in York, SC currently bidding on ebay for $2,025 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go. Big thanks to tip from Andy L.5k: Boswell's Life of 924: 1987 Porsche 924 S
In the late 18th century a Scot by the name of James Boswell wrote a detailed biography of Dr Samuel Johnson, who was a writer, poet and distinguished gentleman. What makes Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson famous isn't that it is the best biography ever written, simply it was the first modern biography and paved the way for hundreds of years of biographies in a way that is difficult for our modern heads to understand. Boswell's masterpiece wasn't just a great work of literature, it was to the art of biography similiar in impact to Aristotle's contribution to logic, St Augustine's impact on Christianity or Yoda's legacy on the Jedi. What car could possibly live up to the crescendo we've created? Simply, the worlds first modern sports car, the Porsche 924. Find this 1987 Porsche 924 S for sale in Scottsdale, AZ currently bidding on ebay for $2,125 with 8 days to go.Sunday, June 16, 2013
5k: Toyotumph: 1964 Triumph TR4 w/Toyota 22R
The Triumph TR4 was small sports car built starting in the early 1960s powered by an updated version of a tractor engine...so it was sporty for the day, but lacks motivation compared to modern cars. This isn't a problem for the gear-head with tools, time and a spare drivetrain. Find this 1964 Triumph TR4 with Toyota 22R engine for sale in Grants Pass, OR currently bidding for $4,720 via ebay.Saturday, June 15, 2013
