Turbocharged Fairlady Roadster: 1967 Datsun Sports 1600

The Datsun SPL311 Fairlady Roadster was exported in left hand drive configuration to the United States and badged as the Datsun 1600.  It was powered by a 1.6 liter R-series inline-4 that pushed out 95 horsepower into a 4-speed manual gearbox -- and while it isn't the fastest car on the block, it handles well and looks good in your classic collection.  Drop in a larger engine with a turbocharger and things get even better.  Find this 1967 Datsun Sports 1600 here on eBay bidding for $5,400 with 1 day to go, located in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

5k: Cleanse Diet: 1967 Datsun 1600

Most people drive around with more car than they need. After years of driving, this excess becomes less and less jarring, until you find yourself in a two-ton AWD fortress with dual-pane glass and enough alphanumeric safety aids to stump whole legions of claims attorneys. Here to purge you of your coddling is a race-tight Fairlady. Non-masochists need not apply. Find this 1967 Datsun 1600/SPL311/Fairlady road-legal racer for sale in Brunswick, OH for $5,000 via craigslist.

5k: Sun Spots: 1967 Datsun Sports Roadster 1600 SPL311

The Datsun Sports (or Datsun Fairlady as it was known in Japan) roadster was a budget friendly convertible built starting in 1959 and only ending when the legendary 240Z was released (1970).  While Z prices have gone up in the past few years, the little roadster is still very affordable, but that can change at any time.  Find this 1967 Datsun Sports Roadster 1600 SPL311 offered here on craigslist for $3,500, located in North San Diego, CA.

10k: Fairlady Roadster: 1966 Datsun 1600 SPL311

You know what they always say, if you want to experience classic British roadster motoring, you should buy a Japanese car, but not a Miata...not today.  Today, you are going to buy a mint condition Datsun SPL311 because sometimes style trumps measurable performance.  Find this 1966 Datsun 1600 SPL311 in Palm Desert, CA currently bidding for $7,500 with 4 days to go.

10k: Neue Klassic: 1967 BMW 1600 Sedan

The BMW Neue Klasse (new class) is primarily known for its 2-door version, the 1600/2000/2002, but they made quite a few of the 4-door sedan version.  The 4-door version shared engines, transmissions and mechanical parts with the 2-door version but offers a little more access for the family man, and is much more rare on the road today.  Find this 1967 BMW 1600 Sedan offered for $9,000 in Beverly Hills, CA via craigslist.

10k: Take Your Pick: 1980 VAZ-2103 or 1981 VAZ-2106 (Lada 1500/1600)

In all my eBay surfing, I've seen some funky auctions-- buy one get one free, buy one and you need to submit a core (or trade-in) but I've never seen someone offer two cars for one price, where the winner selects one car to take home.  Why not create two different auctions?  Seems a strange way to sell your classic Russian sedan, but in Soviet Russia, eBay auction you!  Find a 1980 VAZ-2103 or 1981 VAZ-2106 offered for $9,000 buy-it-now or best offer via ebay, located in Hialeah, FL with a few days to go.

5k: Seller Submission: 1967 Datsun 1600 SPL311 Roadster

The 1959-1970 Datsun Fairlady was badged as the Datsun Sports or Datsun 1600 Roadster in regions outside of Japan.  It was however a fantastic alternative to 2-seat roadsters from Britain and Italy and still quite affordable today.  Today's example comes to us from a seller submission and looks like a decent driver at a fair price -- what more can you ask for?  Find this 1967 Datsun 1600 SPL311 Roadster is offered for $5,950 in SF Bay Area, CA via craigslist.  Seller submission from Davin.

5k: Other Side Of The Tracks: 1969 BMW 1600

The BMW New Class was a line of compact sedans sold from 1962 to 1977 and is currently riding a wave of appreciation that is unusual for mass production car like the 1600/2002.  Most 1600/2002s are getting fancy paint jobs and later fuel injected engines along with big digit prices, so it is nice to see one with a reasonable price tag, even if it is from the other side of the tracks.  Find this 1969 BMW 1600 for sale in Oakland, CA for $5,000 via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

20k: The Other GTR: 1973 Isuzu Bellett 1600 GTR

The name Isuzu means, literally, 50 bells in Japanese and oddly enough they named their first independently designed car the Bellel...for Bell + roman numeral L (50).  A few years later they replaced the Isuzu Hillman Manx being build under license from the Brits, they named this new car the Bellett for small Bellel...but honestly this didn't mean much to the Japanese public who are only familiar with English as names/letters on their automobiles.  Typically automobiles names are translated into the local language or script, but in Japan there is a strange sense of cultural awareness around the origin of the automobile.  According to Nissan design guru Shiro Nakmura, when he was interviewed by Jason Torchinsky of Jalopnik, the use of western characters on automobiles is reflective of the western origin of the horseless carriage and any application of Japanese script (Kanji or Kana) would be just silly.   Find this 1973 Isuzu Bellett 1600 GTR for sale in Kanagawa, Japan for $19,850 via goo-net-exchange.com.

5k: Newer, Funner, More Reliable: 1968 BMW 1600 w/ Upgraded Inline-4

If posting one BMW New Class is good, then two is better...right?  Today's Tii example requires some elbow grease before you can sell it to some rich dude for 30 large, but what if you hate to deal with bad paint?  Pick up this 1968 BMW 1600 with M10 power and 5-speed for sale in Dublin, CA for $6,200.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

15k: New Camino: 1971 BMW 1600 Pickup, M20 Engine

According to internet lore famed GM design chief Harley Earl suggested a coupe pickup as early as 1952, but the Ford Ranchero beat the Chevy El Camino to market by a few years...it doesn't matter because for whatever reason, the El Camino name is "stronger" and has become generic for any coupe pickup in the same way that Kleenex is to tissues, Xerox is to photocopies and Detroit is to crime.  Therefore, if  you take one BMW New Class and El Caminoize it, you've got a New Camino.  Find this 1971 BMW 1600 El Camino with M20 engine for sale in San Francisco, CA for $16,900 buy-it-now on eBay.  Tips from Morgan H.

5k: California Isn't Canada: 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster

For some reason this car, located in Sacramento CA, is being sold via ebay.ca.  Someone needs to tell the seller that ca in this case is short for Canada, not California, eh.Whatever the reason (maybe he likes nice buyers?) the car itself looks great in the photos with an aluminum radiator, cool wheels, and clean condition inside & out. But the description is lacking and the end result is low bids. Not good for the seller, but certainly good for a savvy buyer who knows his way around Datsuns.  Find this 1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster currently bidding on ebay.ca for $4,001 USD, but located in Sacramento, California.

15k: 1967 B(uick)MW 1600 215 V8 Project Car

The BMW Neue Klasse (New Class) was sold from 1962-1976 with a number of 4-cylinder engines.  If it had ever been sold new with the Buick/Rover 215 V8, it would have been badged a BMW 3500 and would have been fantastic, something a hot-rodder in SoCal decided to prove.  This 1967 BMW 1600 project car is equipped with an all-alloy Buick V8 and is for sale in Mission Viejo, CA for $15,000 via craigslist.

The Datsun Fairlady was a small roadster from parent company Nissan, produced from 1959-1970, and marketed as the Datsun Sports or Datsun 1600 Roadster in regions outside of Japan.  It was however a fantastic alternative to 2-seat roadsters from Britain and Italy and are quite affordable today.  This 1966 Datsun Fairlady 1600 roadster is equipped wtih a FJ20ET motor swap, located in Imperial Beach, CA and currently bidding on ebay for $3,000 with 3 days to go.
