Our discussion the other day about craigslist, Hemmings, and BaT brought out some interesting observations on the "collector" car market and it seemed a consensus here on DT people want cheap but interesting cars that can be driven...not stupidly overpriced show queens that are only valueable if the odometer reading is kept low.  (Did you all see that '97 Toyota Supra Turbo with 69k miles that sold for $176,000 at Barrett-Jackson...why??!?! It's not even stock!!  Uggg...people are stupid.  You could have a C3 Corvette, a different MkIV Supra, and a house in Cincinnati for that much!!!).  Anyway, if you want a sub $5k car that'll keep you entertained for a few months, I think this next car is a good candidate. 400hp Sleeper: 1993 Honda Accord

This next car comes as a tip from Matt C who writes: Only slightly less unexpected than the Spanish Inquisition. From the side, you wouldn't expect anything serious going on - just an old Honda with some cheap rims. Plenty of cars out there with a few cosmetic mods and not much money under the hood, and there's not much aftermarket for early '90s Accords. But then there's that big front mounted intercooler. And it doesn't lie - there's a turbo under the hood, all right. Could be an interesting sleeper if it's tuned right and making any boost. Every year I like to make a list of the car models that are disappearing. Often, they create an opportunity for savvy car shoppers to work with dealers looking to unload undesirable cars they no longer want.

Some of these cars still exist as other variants or rebadged models, some are just on a hiatus, while many are down and out for a permanent dirt nap (cue Monty Python skit here).

3k: Battle Of The Bore: 1988 Camry vs 1983 Accord

How do you make the world's most boring dull-machines a bit more exciting?  Carbon fiber wings, fart can exhaust and neon underglow?  Nope, not even close.  Try leaving them 100% stock, but make sure they are low optioned, manual transmission as original as possible...then, and only then will the buyers come running.  It just so happens that two discount specials from appliance city just fell into our tips inbox...time for a comparison!
