Shingijutsu Jidai Wa Toyota: 1984 Toyota Corolla SR5 AE86 Hatchback

I've got to admit that I don't know why Toyota  two different cars with the AE86 platform in Japan, first the Corolla Levin that was sold at the Toyota Corolla Store  and then Sprinter Trueno that was sold at Toyota Auto Store...this setup is literally foreign to me...so I'll just start across the Pacific where Toyota dealers sold something called the Toyota Corolla DX, SR5, and GT-S...which was equally at home on a daily commute or doing Initial D style drifting. Find this 1984 Toyota Corolla AE86 Hatchback offered for $6000 in South Bay Los Angeles, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Hachi-Go: 1987 Toyota Corolla SR5

The AE85/86 generation Toyota Corolla built from 1983 to 1987 was the last truly great economy car to come from the biggest auto maker in the world.  No one will ever buy a Prius years from now for its driving experience or consider picking up a modified RAV4 to turn back to stock, but the 30 year old Corolla is a different animal at its core.  Find this 1987 Toyota Corolla SR5 offered for $4000 in Denver, CO via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Sorry Low Mile AE86: 1985 Toyota Corolla SR5

The E80 generation Toyota Corolla isn't a car that gets your motor revving, except maybe AE86 3-door hatchback version that kept rear wheel drive setup (the 4-door version went to a fun-killing transverse engine front-drive layout in 1983) from the previous generation.  This next Corolla might have the fun-killing automatic transmission, but it has an eye opening 6,686 miles on the odometer.  Find this 1985 Toyota Corolla SR5 offered for $11,995 CAD ($9,266 USD) at a dealer in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Tip from John.

A Collection Japanese Classics from Matt

This collection of cars comes from Matt C who writes: You've done them for vans and land yachts of this period - here's a round up of Japanese econoboxes from the late '70s and early '80s, many in better shape than these have any right to be.  What could be better than a collection of Japanese econoboxes on a Thursday afternoon?

5k: Coach Built: 1983 Toyota Corolla SR5 Convertible

The 4th generation Toyota Corolla (1979-1987) was the final edition of the legendary compact that used rear-wheel-drive across the entire platform.   It was one of those cars that did not make a big splash when new, but quietly went about the business of moving people around in relative comfort and reliability.  Find this 1983 Toyota Corolla SR5 Convertible here on eBay offered for $7,500 buy-it-now or make-offer, located in Lancaster, PA with 5 days to go.

10k: I Wanna Go Fast: 1972 Toyota Corolla TE27

5k: Pooh Brown: 1987 Toyota Tercel Wagon SR5 AWD 5-spd

The 2nd generation S20 Toyota Tercel wasn't a fast car by any yardstick, but it was one of the only wagons to feature all-wheel-drive and a 6-speed manual transmission.  The transmission was really a 5 speed with an additional granny gear for hill climbing, but it did indeed have 6 forward gears when even most sports cars had 4 or 5.  Find this 1987 Toyota Tercel Wagon SR5 5-spd for sale in Helena, MT for $3,200 via craigslist.

3 of 50: Jennifer: 1985 Toyota Hilux Truck, SR5 4x4

The Toyota Hilux (or "Truck" as it was sold in North America) was the quintessential compact pickup produced by the biggest Japanese Megalocorporation. Toyota makes all manner of coma-inducing nannymobiles today but back in the mid '80s were bringing their A-game and the 4WD Hilux peaked with a one year only combo of solid front axle (for superior offroad articulation) and EFI (for better power, economy and smoothness). We named this one Jennifer after Marty McFly's girlfriend, and although it isn't black like Marty's truck it is a fine example and as close to the ultimate mini as we could hope to find on 24 hours notice. Find this 1985 Toyota SR5 here on craigslist for $8999 in San Antonio, Texas. Thanks to Andy L. for the tip!
