There’s a guy at who works at our local salvage yard in Charleston who has built a ‘rat rod’ out of various components skimmed off of cars on their way into the yard, starting with the body of an unknown depression-era origin. I don’t like him or his car because he yelled at me for trying to remove parts from it on my first visit, both because it was parked in a friggin’ junkyard and it was a complete pile. As we transition from the questionable unusable cars from the 1920s into the almost daily driveable cars from the 1930s, we keep finding Model As...probably because Ford built 4 million of the things from 1927-1931. The Ford Model A was the successor to Ford's famous Model T - and at one time littered the American automotive landscape like cockroaches at a food truck festival. Ford sold a

I'm not sure if I speak for the rest of the DT staff, but I've got a healthy appreciation for pre-war Ford product. Sure, it seems like 95% of hot rods started as '32 Fords, but there is a mechanical elegance and tasteful simplicity about a stock blue oval from this period. If Henry hadn't ceded some control to his son Edsel in the late '20s, I'm sure that Dearborn would have pumped out Model Ts until federal safety and emissions standards were introduced. It's a good thing he did though, because the Model A was the company's first car with modern controls and is a classic in its own right. Graham Oats is one of those pre-digital age hot rodders whose legacy is difficult to understand, even though he worked alongside guys like George Barris (who actually has a website). Oats, on the other hand, has the unfortunately coincidence of being named after a hot breakfast and resulting google searches return little information, except from a few folks who have owned one of his creations. You can probably find books in a library featuring his stuff, and maybe someone can add some details in the comments.
