10k: Oldsmocamino: 1949 Oldsmobile Custom Pickup

In 1949 Oldsmobile had a lineup that consisted of 3 full sized automobiles, the 76, 88, and 98.  The three cars use styling similar to the Oldsmobile Futuramic styling concept and only the biggest die hard Olds expert will be able to identify each model correctly. Making identification even more difficult in today's next feature is the El Caminoization that masks rear end styling, but it really doesn't matter because this car is now SBC powered.  Find this 1949 Oldsmobile Custom Pickup currently bidding on ebay for $8,000 reserve-not-met with 6 days to go in Dallas Center, IA.  Tip from Mike M.


The 1949 Oldsmobile shape is seen often in the So Cal custom scene, but a Bat-Wing trunk El Camino is another story altogether.  Someone has put a significant amount of work into this thing and it looks interesting to say the least.


The air cleaner cover may say "Oldsmobile Rocket" on the top, but that is a Chevy 350 cubic inch V8 mated to a Turbo Hydramatic 350 slushbox.  This custom dates from the era when everybody shoved 350/350 engine/trans drivetrains into just about anything with wheels.  You've got a Pinzgauer that needs an engine...here is a derelict Corvette for a few hundred bones...Oh your chopper broke down, swap in this Camaro drivetrain after work.  To quote Niecy Nash: foolishness and mayhem reigned supreme.


Speaking of foolishness and mayhem...the barefoot shaped gas pedal rears its ugly head.  Unfortunately the seller does not include a good detailed set of photos of the back window; the quality of detail work on a custom job like this is critical to properly assess value. This rear treatment looks unfortunately similar to a pickup camper shell side window.

    I like this a lot except for the rear window and the auto..both of which presumably could be changed . Be interestng to ask the builder why heor she used that rear window . Just looks out of place. That said it is interesting
