The Porsche 924 came out during the era of front-engined watercooled Porsche coupes and was an entry level offering for a few years. The 924 was soon made redundant by the Porsche 944 which stole its basic components but put a Porsche (instead of the 924's Audi sourced) engine into the front and added meaty fender flares. The 924 wasn't (isn't?) a bad car, it was simply out gunned by its siblings and went out of production in 1988. Find this 1977 Porsche 924 offered for $4,500 in Southern New Hampshire via craigslist. The seller desribes this 924 as a D Production car, which would normally indicate that it was raced in the SCCA product classes, but the seller goes on to say it has a "D Production" body kit. It seems likely that this is a replica of a "build your own racer" kit car that Porsche themselves produced for customers to compete in D Production racing. It would be awesome if this was a real Porsche-produced D Production car, but the body enhancements on this yellow example don't look much like the real thing. The Porsche 924 is powered by a 2.0 liter inline-4 borrowed from Audi that puts out 125 horsepower and 122 ft-lbs of torque. If you like to work hard for your speed, the 924 is the car for you because it doesn't make it easy. The real D Production engine made 185 hp @ 7500 rpm, which would be decidedly more entertaining on the track, especially with the real racer's weight of only 1900 lbs.

ReplyDeleteA part replica...this is a 924 with a bodykit. The real SCCA racers had about $40K worth of upgrades, mainly mechanical.

ReplyDeleteI communicated with the seller who is in my area. He said he is a SCCA racer and instructor. He wanted to use this in his track work with students. A replica yes, but a lot of work and money went into this. Could be finished easily and fast for the street. Maybe well worth the low and said "somewhat flexible" price, depending on how it was built.
