The 1st generation Audi RS6 was a blisteringly fast halo sedan when first built by Quattro GmbH for sale in Audi dealers around the world. The RS6 eschews big wings and scoops on its way to being the baddest super sedan around in 2003, in fact the only hint that it is something special is the bell bottom wheel flares and baby's head sized exhaust pipe outlets.
Under the hood is a masterpiece of dual-overhead-cam, 5-valve per cylinder, all-alloy, kitten-murdering, twin-turbocharged, awesome that puts out 450 horsepower and 428 ft-lbs of ass-hauling torque available from as low as 1950 rpm on the tach.
The biggest turn off (aside from 10 year old Audi maintenance costs; which can be best described as going to a dentist who has 4 kids in college and alimony payments...once a week) in the RS6 has to be the obligatory 5-speed slushbox automatic. It isn't the worst auto ever built and it has all sorts of sophisticated controls related to the Quattro torsen-based permanent all-wheel-drive system, but it still saps some of the fun from the RS6 experience.

ReplyDeleteAs someone who once owned a 10 year old Audi A8L I've never heard my experience described better. This thing would cost more to maintain for two years than to purchase.
It makes me wonder- has owning an Audi prepared me for maintenance costs on the 1984 Ferrari 400i I desire? It can't really cost any more, right?
As the former bitch of a B6 A4, I concur with the above. Doing my own work, by 10 years and 80k miles, I was still spending over $2,000 in parts for the thing so I decided to offload it.

haha! I hear you... I bought a 98 A8 last year for $2400, and I've spend so much money on it... probably will sell at the end of the year, so I still enjoy the suspension parts I put in December...
Deleterottenland: In reference to your 400i question, things can always get worse when it comes to maintenance expenses. That's one of the big spoilers with this car-buff bug we have all been stricken with. Nothing spoils the ownership experience quite like paying huge amounts of money just to stay on the road.
