The E28 M5 (only available in the US Market for the 1988 model year) packed the engine taken from the M1 supercar into a luxury sedan and changed the world of luxury sport sedans. The E28 M5 market is very dynamic right now; in the last year we've found sub $9k projects and $12k versions with questionable history, but it is unusual to find an example for $15k that is offered as a well kept survivor with a good maintenance history. Imagine, for a minute, what the seller would be asking if this was an E30 M3...
The US spec E28 M5 is equipped with the S38 B35 catalyst equipped 3.5 liter inline six putting out 256 horsepower - enough to make the M5 the fastest sedan ever built when it was new. The S38 was a detuned version of the BMW M1 supercar engine (mated to the 535's 5-spd manual trans and standard limited slip diff), and compared to everything else sold in or before 1988 it was fast.
The E28 M5 was only offered for one year in North America and only offered in one color, jet black with tan interior. It came the way you see here and the only consumer selectable option was heated seats. Everything else: the central locks, computer, leather door panels, power windows, full trunk carpet, air conditioning and shadow-line trim were standard.

Man, that's top dollar for a 100k+ mile e28 M5 with no clue of true mileage and a whole lotta maybes, could be's, and generally unverifiable assumptions about it's maintenance----especially lackadaisical coming from the owner of a euro shop.
ReplyDeleteThere is a similar looking 5 in the local tow yard that, if still impounded will go to auction next Saturday. From a distance it looks decent (I haven't had time to go take a look) only missing one of its kidneys. It is black with the same wheels as the featured car and also has the tan guts. It will probably go in the low hundreds as junk yards seem to frequent these auctions to replenish there stock, I'm thinking if it is in decent enough shape it could be a LS candidate
