0.5k: Hack Job: 1980's BMW 528e E28 Custom Convertible

The BMW E28 sedan is a well depreciated classic that should be on the short list of anyone looking for a proper handling 80s sedan for cheap.  This 1980ish BMW 528e E28 Custom Convertible is offered for $500 in East Dayton, OH via craigslist.  Tip from The Hack Mechanic who writes;
You have to admire the joie de vivre, the devil-may-care, the live-for-today-for-tomorrow-we-may-have-to-drive-a-Subaru ethic that went into this particular creation.

Seeing this thing induces a spine tingling cringe not experienced since watching Cher dance around in a fishnet thong while her poor son played guitar in the music video If I Could Turn Back Time.  If only Cher could turn back time (not on her physique, which only seems to get more youthful with time) but on this 528e which needs a serious injection of botox and a major lift.

Not a lot of hope for the condition the original 2.7 liter M20 high efficiency (eta) engine good for 121 horsepower and 171 ft-lbs of torque, but if it runs this would be a great starter for a 24 Hours of LeMons team.

  1. Yeah, LeMons is about the only respectable (?) destination for this...thing. The eta is a torquey thing and get some love in 24 HoL cars. Keep the paint as-is and judges may not lump you into the DB Bimmer crowd at a race. You gotta love the sellers prose; he doesn't lie...exactly.

    I'd like to see Rob go buy this........if he thought he bought his son's 318ti in a rough section of town, this would be a real eye-opener.

  4. I like that the hacked off roof appears to be lying on the ground in pic #2, with the sad sad B pillar and grab handles.

  5. The C pillar looks happy though, now that it's a custom spoiler!

  6. What does it say on the passenger side?

    “Scrap Or Dis”?

  7. If only the seller had been smart enough to park it in front of one of the many gabled maxi-mansions of the newway rich.....he could have asked double the price! That and fix the strut fer chrissakes if you want to sell the car!

  8. Naw. Don't think so. At 400.00/corner, I don't want to deal with replacing the TRX tires. Once on the CX was enough.

    Good luck with the sale though. You're going to need it.
