HP Sauce: 1980 Porsche 924

People ask me why I'm such a freak when it comes to cars.  I don't have a good answer, but my mom always says that I wasn't dropped on my head and that I was obsessed with cars at a young age, but for whatever reason...I like them odd.  Wierd.  Brown.  Slow.  Horrible.  Yup...winner, winner, liver & onions dinner.  Find this 1980 Porsche 924 offered for $2000 in Ventura, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Sean S.

One Owner: 1983 BMW 733i E23

I've always dreamed of opening my own high end car restoration shop, along the lines of what Icon does with FJs, Eagle does with Jaguar, or what Singer does with Porsche...but I would restore nothing but shark-nosed BMWs. All of those inexpensive 6-series, 5-series, and 7-series are begging to have their bumpers tucked, modern conveniences added, and body lines adjusted to perfection.  Unfortunately, this past weekend I spent most of Saturday in the garage hacking up a piece of box steel to replace a broken link in my garage door...so...no DT Restoration Shop yet.  Find this 1983 BMW 733i offered for $8,900 near Albuquerque, NM via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Coronado Speed Festival 2017

SpeedFest2016

This past weekend was another day of watching incredible vintage racing machines tear around on a stretch of runway at Coronado Navy Base in San Diego.  The 2017 Coronado Speed Festival was just as great as previous years, and the weather in America's Finest City couldn't have been better. Click here to access a collection of 547 photos that I snapped at the event. -Editor Vince

Coffee Brake: Weekend Plans

I will spend most of this next weekend on a soccer field coaching my daughter's team and refereeing other matches, but I'm sure you guys have projects to do...so let me live vicariously through your garage work!

What are you doing this weekend?

Nice Paint Scheme: 1971 Ford Pinto

My old man always said that if you are going to do something crazy, do it right...wait...that's not what he said.  He said if you can't be smart, be colorful.  Which brings us to this next car, which is one of the nicest examples of a slushbox equipped Ford Pinto that you'll ever see.  Colorful, indeed.  Find this 1971 Ford Pinto offered for $5,900 in Thousand Oaks, CA via craigslist. Tip from Sean S.

Turbo'd V8: 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The original Mazda MX-5 is known around the globe as a great car for the discerning sportsman who wants a car that handles well and needs a good driver to ring the maximum out of the small engine.  It is the opposite of the ham-fisted V8 muscle car crowd and is the spiritual revival of the small British roadster...expect that today's example is a Cobra in disguise.  Find this 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata here on eBay offered for $24,999 buy-it-now or make-offer located in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Thursday Twister: Hurricane

You'd have to be living under a rock to not know about the recent hurricanes that have devastated parts of Texas and Florida, and the flooding has been particularly hard on homes, businesses and cars. You might be able to replace the drywall in your home before the studs become covered in black mold, but according to Forbes the flooding from Irma and Harvey destroyed over a million cars & trucks.  What does that mean?  It means that junk yards are going to be bursting with molding cars -- and locals in Texas will note that the Texas Motor Speedway is being used to store the overflow of cars looking for someone who will part them out or ship them to Yemen with sketchy title status.

Jolly Green Dwarf: 1967 MG Midget

The MG Midget is a peppy little chihuahua of a car, with more zip, zap, and yip than you would ever expect from a classic British sports car.  Pound for pound it'll put more smiles on the faces of random strangers than a puppy-money-baby and good luck getting your puppy-money-baby to give you a ride to work.  Find this 1967 MG Midget for $2500 near Ft Myers, FL via craigslist. Electric 3-Wheeler: 1967 Sports Rider by Kelsen Manufacturing

The modern version of the three wheel automobile has taken a decidedly sporty approach (with the exception of the Elio...which will probably never actually be sold in any decent quantity) with things like the Slingshot and the Campagna T-Rex...but it wasn't always this way.  There was a time when a three wheeler was just a single performance step above a bicycle.  Find this 1967 Sports Rider by Kelsen Manufacturing offered for $2,000 in Petaluma, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Vee-Twelve: 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL600

The Mercedes-Benz lineup in the early 2000s might look confusing (C, E, S, CL, CLC, CLK, CL, SLK, SLC, SLK, SL, SLR, R, etc) to a person who was used to simpler times, but the product planners at Mercedes-Benz knew exactly what they were doing...which was fleecing every last cent they could get from the wannabe wealthy, the actually wealthy, and the mega-wealthy in the case of this last car.  Thankfully you don't have to be wealthy to afford this next car, unless something goes wrong...in which case you'd better hope your trust fund has matured.  Find this 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL600 offered for $6,500 near Houston, TX via craigslist.

Rare Swedish V8: 2007 Volvo S80

Words by Hunsbloger: These things are as rare as hen's teeth, Trust Me, I've tried to find low mileage ones for years.  The owners love them and tend to really stack some mileage on them. They are only available as automatics and all of the V8's are AWD.  If he's cut off the mufflers (as stated in text), this thing is going to be beastly sounding.  Find this 2007 Volvo S80 offered for $14,999 in Chambersburg, PA via craigslist.  Tip from Jeff S.

B is for Brown: 1977 Datsun B210

The story seen quite often here on DT is one where a malaise era econo-box that has managed to escape the depreciation curve generates a big interest from the readership, until we scroll down to the interior pictures and find a slushbox.  Then the inevitable comment about the auto killing interest.  Our next example survivor is a fine brown example with a shift-it-yourself transmission.  Are you ready to put your money where your keyboard is?  Find this 1977 Datsun B210 for sale in Olympia, WA for $4,000 via craigslist.

Northeast Field Report: Sunday 9/17 Caffeine And Carburetors

If you live anywhere in the tri-state area Caffeine and Carburetors in tony NYC suburb New Canaan, CT is a 100% must see event.  I am very local to here and went to their only 2017 show two days ago.  The vast array of high end cars that show up for this event blows me away each and every single time I visit.  Porsche 911s are so common here it that it makes them seem like a mass produced Honda Accord.  There are always some really out of the ordinary cars here that you read about but just never see in the wild.  Porsche was the featured marque so I purposely was looking for obscure subjects aside from them.  Here are a number of pictures of some beauties that caught my eye.

Rotary Wedge: 1980 Triumph TR7

The seller describes this next car as "not your typical 80's crappy Triumph" -- hey, that isn't really fair...okay...maybe it is. The TR7 had some sweet wedge style, but power was low and handling wasn't exactly amazing, but some car builder decided to change that. Find this 1980 Triumph TR7 offered for $5,500 in Olympia, WA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

What Am I? A Thing

It is Monday morning, and time to solve the weekly What Am I? puzzle, and today we've got one from the camera of a DT regular.

Bargain Executive Express: 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-spec

If you are not a brand snob and can appreciate 13 second 1/4 mile runs from your heated and cooled seats, we have a contender worthy of your consideration today.  In 2012 Hyundai added the hot rod R-spec option package to the Genesis sedan.  The most noteworthy changes were the addition of the 5.0 429 horsepower V8 engine, special headlights, and 19" wheels.  The R-spec car was pretty close to $50k only a five years ago so I did a double take when I saw one well south of the DT price threshold.  Find this 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-spec for sale in Monroe, CT for $12,000 via craigslist.

Banana Boat: 1968 Sterling Kit Car

The shape you see on the screen first appeared as the Nova kit car, produced in the UK by Richard Oakes and Phil Sayers using a swoopy fiberglass body, and Volkswagen Beetle chassis with buyer provided running gear.  The same design was later branded as the Sterling, Cimbria and Purvis, and apparently you can even buy a new one today.  That sounds expensive, so I'll stick to the old used examples like this 1968 Sterling Kit Car offered for $8,500 in Mendocino County, CA via craigslist.  Tip from James.

Franks And Beans: 1990 Honda Civic Convertible

In the 1990's, the Civic really hit it's stride here in the US and became a runaway hit for Honda.  The beloved hatchback body style was very commonly found during this time period.  JDM modifications and the Fast and the Furious craze were at near peak so a modified Japanese cars were literally a dime a dozen.  An enterprising soul has chopped the top on today's Civic hatchback, but chose pass on installing a convertible top of any sort.   The builder completely re-engineered the rear seat and hatch area into a functional hot dog stand.  The final product is surely the most Daily Turismo Civic to ever roam the streets. Find this 1990 Honda Civic for sale in Newburgh, NY for $1,200 via craigslist.
