Snow White: 1971 Volvo 145S

Double Thorsday on a Wednesday?! With the Winter Olympics going on, it's pertinent to talk about choices of old affordable cars for ski trips. If you live in the great frozen North then you already have a winter beater and need not apply, but for those of us who have to drive to the mountains to slide face first through the snow into a whiteout oblivion, we need to think about whether our vehicle will get us there without much drama. Find this 1971 Volvo 145S for sale in Hermosa Beach, CA for $6,250 via craigslist.

Snow what: 2015 Husqvarna 450 Snow Bike

Winter is right around the corner.  Some of the ski areas near where I live got a couple of inches of the white stuff at the top last week (since melted).  What could be a more DT way to get ready for La Nina than a picking up a cross between a motorcycle and a snow machine off of Craigslist?  Find this 2015 Husqvarna 450 Snow Bike for sale in Bozeman, MT for $12,000 via craigslist.

Snova-mobile: 1970 Chevrolet Nova Custom

When does a custom car stop being simply a car and become a legend?  I dunno, but I can tell you that you are getting close when you add the length of a Suburban and 6 wheels powering treads to the back of your Chevy Nova.  Find this 1970 Chevrolet Nova Custom Snowmobile offered for $2,500 in Round Mountain, NV.

5k: Vintage Hauler: 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside Pickup Truck

To this day the Corvair is a rear-engined anomaly in the catalog of American built automobiles.  The Ed Cole led team at GM released the subtle styled Corvair as the rest of Detroit was trying to build bigger tailfins and build a functioning chrome windshield.  The Corvair was different...a little bit European in its style, but strongly American in execution.  Most of the Vairs you see on these pages are from the refreshed and better handling 2nd generation ('65-'69) but if you want one of the Van/Wagon/Pickup versions, you'll need to look at the first gen.  Find this 1961 Corvair Rampside Pickup Truck offered for $7,450 in San Bruno, CA via craigslist.

15k: Giant Pez Dispenser: 1956 Powell Sport Wagon

From 1954 to 1957 a small enterprise in Compton, CA called Powell  Manufacturing Company built a vehicle called the Sport Wagon.  It used a 1941 Plymouth chassis...no really, each Powell was built on a used 1941 Plymouth chassis that had been reclaimed from a junkyard with a new steel body was plopped atop the used chassis.  You won't find many Powells just sitting around on your local craigslist, but when you do come across one they can be fairly affordable for the level or rarity and coolness.  Find this 1956 Powell Sport Wagon (and potentially a scooter as well) offered for $14,999 via craigslist located in Hoover, AL.

2k: Friendly Submission: 1968 Ford F-250 Camper Special Long Bed Truck

We got a note the other day from DT regular AbnMike who says:
Very nice original work truck. Buddy wrote the ad, he needs the money desperately.
This feature falls somewhere between a tip and a seller submission, but we'll give it the new sub mission badge because it looks sweet.  Find this 1968 Ford F250 Camper Long Bed Truck offered for $2,200 in Bernal Heights, CA via craigslist.

5k: Cab Forward: 1969 Chevrolet G10 Sportvan

The 2nd generation Chevrolet G-series Sportvan was a cab forward compact van that replaced the rear-engined Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier in the small van segment.  The engine was located foward and under the driver and it allowed for a lower load floor in the back and the use of Chevy's watercooled inline-6 and V8 engines - a much needed improvement in speed and hauling capacity over the aircooled flat-6 in the Greenbrier.  Find this 1969 Chevrolet G10 for sale in Angola, IN currently bidding for $5,200 with 5 days to go.

5k: Compact Sleeper Cab Dually: 1981 Plymouth Arrow Custom

Imagine a compact pickup truck that is equipped with a large bed, dually tires in the back for hauling, has a sleeper cab, gets great fuel economy from its 2-liter 4-banger, and can be purchased for about $5k.  Great.  Imagine now that it is absolutely worthless for accomplishing any single one of the tasks you want to use it for...but--like a cold french fry at the bottom of a greasy burger bag--you still want it.  Find this 1981 Plymouth Arrow Pickup Base Standard Cab Pickup 2-Door 2.0L for sale in Conneaut, OH for $5,000 via ebay.  Tip from Andy L.

Find this 1969 Lotus Europa S2 barn find for $3,383 reserve not met with 2 days to go.  Words and tip from DT commenter & contributor  slowcarSLOW-MPGlol.

5k: Four Seat Allanté: 1995 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

If you were a dentist who wanted to drive a convertible Cadillac in the early 1990s, your only factory option was the Allanté, which had Italian looks and a Northstar V8, but no back seat.  This meant no room for your mistress's illegitimate kids or dogs, or illegitimate dogs.  Thankfully, a few aftermarket companies such as Coach Builders Limited were willing to chop the top from an Eldorado and now you could have your mistress jump out of a cake and eat it too.  Find this 1995 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible for sale in Boca Raton, FL currently bidding for $5,201 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go.
