The Saab 99 was first released for public consumption in 1967 for the 1968 model year as a somewhat up-market replacement for the aging Saab 96, which continued production alongside the 99 for many years. Today's version is a EMS notchback -- Electronic Manual Special and covered in the single year Sunset orange paint, but if you think the color is shocking, just wait till you see the asking price. '74 is a good year for the Saab 99 EMS, not only will it be smog exempt in places like California, but it was the only year the EMS was available in Sunset orange, and this one (according to the seller) might be one of three located in the USA.
Under the forward hinged hood is a 2.0 liter B-series inline-4 fed by a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system and rated at 118 horsepower and 123 ft-lbs of torque. It was mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox and was only available with a manual (non power assist) steering rack.
This particular car has been through a partial restoration, the engine/transmission rebuilt along with many other parts...but the car still needs some items, like side view mirrors, a headliner.

ReplyDeleteI am 99% certain this is the same car that was advertised on Craigslist in January 2014 with an asking price of $2,000. It was located in the Cleveland area at that time. The blemish on the driver's seat is in exactly the same spot, and the missing headliner is another clue. Curiously, at that time the car did have the lower grill piece which is now missing -- I wonder what happened to it? It also had non-original side mirrors then, which I presume are the "replacement racing mirrors from the 70's" mentioned by the current seller.
ReplyDeleteIt really did look to be in excellent condition in the pics from 2014. I was seriously thinking about buying it then. The previous seller did not say much in the ad about the engine, but cosmetically, it looked about the same as it does now.
I don't know how much a full engine rebuild on this cost, but that's a big jump from $2K to $15K.
This is the same car. I purchased a basket case. It was not running. I paid more than $2K. The car has been mechanically restored by East of Sweden II in Broomfield, CO. This car can now be driven from Coast to Coast at interstate speeds, 75 MPH at 3900 RPM in 4th gear. $15K is only a suggested asking price. Bid on BaT Auctions. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteSeems that the last few nice examples of whatever car get offered at inflated prices to flush out the diehard nostalgic fan with more cash than common sense.
As any car person knows, common sense is not always the top of the list. It would be a really sweet car at half the ask. The SAAB engines during this time were truly great, robust units.
As long as one avoided Primitive Pete speed shifts and frequently changed the lubricant, the transmission would last. If not, they broke.
