The S30 generation Datsun/Nissan 240Z continues to be one of the better bargains for anything with two seats from the early '70s. The chassis is light and communicative, the engine put out decent power, and the shape is easy on the eyes. Stick it to the pavement with slicks mounted on Minilites, put some aero pieces in place of headlights and it makes one good looking racer. Find this 1973 Datsun 240Z Racer project here on eBay

This S30-Z isn't the show ready turn-key car you were looking for...but it does have some decent bones and a fair asking price. A big plus in this Z is minimal rust -- that's one thing about a vintage racer, you won't find any rust on a car that has run recently because the driver doesn't want to die and SVRA/VARA/NASA/SCCA don't want cars falling apart on track.
Powering this Z is a 2.4 liter inline-4 that has been massaged (seller doesn't know exact details of the internals) and is fed with a set of SU-carbs. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox from a 280ZX and runs in to an open R180 diff out back.

2.4 inline 6*. Though the valve cover may indicate a 2.8l turbo engine... the covers are interchangeable between L24, L26, L28 and L28ET (and the assortment of heads that came on each) so it is by no means an indicator of what lies beneath it. I'd like to see head and block casting numbers but hell for $6500 you couldn't build one. I'd pull the trigger if I didn't already have an S30.
