The Mercedes-Benz R107 2-door roadster has been a pretty good value for the past decade or so, with prices languishing around the cost of a good engine rebuild. That might be changing in the next few years as Hagerty has registered a serious uptick in value according to their online reports, but that doesn't mean you can't find a cheap version with the big V8 and a King Kong hood ornament. Tipper Art suggested that the non-stock hood ornament was a rooster or cock, but I think it looks like a small gorilla mooning people in front of the car -- what do you think it is? Regardless, the R107 generation Mercedes-Benz two-seat drop-top mated the mechanical components of the W114 sedan with the engines from the W108.
In the North American market 560SL, power comes from a 5.6 liter V8 that produces 227 horsepower and 287 ft-lbs of torque that is mated to a 4-speed automatic. You won't win many drag races, but the car feels very capable at freeway passing speeds.

Must agree, looks like monkey butt to me. I would pull that off and throw it in the yard before I left the property with the car. Out side doesn't look beat up, if inside isn't beat up it might make a pretty nice driver...

ReplyDeleteBefore laughing too heartily, no one ever thought SL190's would be selling for the goofy prices they are seeing the last several years. Amazing the evolution from chump to champ almost overnight.
Oh, plus, these cars an incredible nightmare to maintain, and truly any substantial part means you call the scrap guy posthaste.
Definitely a silverback shootin tha moon there.
