The A100 was Detroit's version of the VW Van and featured cab-over style from Chrysler's Dodge brand from 1964-1970. Today they are sought after for their funky looks, basic reliability and form-follows-function utility and for pick-nicking at the beach. Is that legal? The Dodge A100 with pop up top is a great way to get into a classic camper without paying the ludicrous premiums demanded for the VW bus/van/wagon. The inline-6 (or V8) powered A100 is much faster, but it will drink through gas. Handling is also boat-like, but at least it will not merge on the freeway at a reasonable clip.
This A100 has some custom installed junk on the inside, a sink, stove and fridge. These items will crush you in the event of a minor impact with other vehicles, but they will save your life if you get stuck on the freeway in snomaggedon. While other drivers are fighting over blankets and burning their dead to stay warm, you will have a supply of food, water and a bed for several days. No need to reenact the Donner party crossing in this thing.

ReplyDeleteNeeds a V-8 318 or larger if you plan on getting down the freeway, around town or back roads the slanty might work.
ReplyDeleteNice! I would just hotten up that slant six and stay true to the all over funkiness of this little unit. My memory might be failing me but I thought you can pull 200+ HP out of the slant 6 without losing reliability. One horse per cube or there about.
ReplyDeleteIn 1975 I bought one of the same color as this one. had the slant in it. I shipped it to Italy while I was in the Navy. It looked like a monster on the roads over there. Mine had a Propane tank ( like forklift) mounted on the roof behind the pop up. I really enjoyed that van. Brought it home in 75 sold it to some guy who was headed to Guatemala with it.
