6-speed manual: 2005 Ford F-350 6.0L PowerStroke diesel

The 6.0 liter Powerstroke V8 was introduced to the Ford SuperDuty pickup in 2003 and it packed quite a turbodiesel punch.  In 2005, it was further upgraded to 325 horsepower and 570 ft-lbs of stump pulling torques -- which is very nice when matched to a 6-speed manual box. Find this 2005 Ford F-350 6.0L PowerStroke diesel offered for $12000 in Elkton, MD via craigslist. Tip from Jeff S.

Not So Delicate: 1992 Mitsubishi Delica Exceed 4WD Turbodiesel

The Mitsubishi Delica was a compact Japanese van with unibody construction, a mid-engine RWD or 4WD drivetrain, and a smattering of engine options. These were sold in North America under the creative model names Van and Wagon, and only lasted a few years here (1987-1990). Those were basic cargo and people mover versions, but if Mitsu had offered us the full-on 4WD turbodiesel Delica in this market, they might have been as common as 4Runners and Cherokees. Find this Mitsubishi Delica 4WD for sale in Fort Myers, FL for $15,000 via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

6-Speed Duramax: 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD

The Silverado name first appeared on the side of a Chevy pickup in 1999 on the replacement for the 75-98 Chevrolet C/K pickup, but there were two different versions of the Silverado. The first is a light duty version that could be purchased in 1500 and 2500 versions, but there was heavy duty version that was sold as the 1500HD, 2500HD and 3500HD -- and the HD was the only way to get the boosted Duramax diesel torque machine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.  Find this 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD offered for $5,500 in Daleville, IN via craigslist.

Built E28 Turbodiesel: 1985 BMW 524TD

BMW launched their second generation of their executive 5-series in 1981 with styling by Claus Luthe and power by straight-six engines.  Naturally, the speed lovers will want the M5 version, but prices for those all-black beauties have skyrocketed in the past few years and the juice might not be worth the squeeze.  Next up is the 535i, which does provide a decent punch and can be picked up with a 5-speed manual box...but what about a highly tuned oil burner?  Find this 1985 BMW 524TD offered for $8,500 in Seattle, WA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

Classic Looks, Modern Power: 1986 Ford F250 7.3 TurboDiesel

The Ford F-series pickup was in its seventh generation for the North American market when they introduced a diesel engine in the 1983 -- largely as a response to the success of GM's diesel which was gaining steam since its introduction in 1978.  The early diesel engines were unsophisticated and gutless, and it was only with the introduction of turbocharging that they became comparable and eventually better than their gasoline counterparts.  Find this 1986 Ford F250 7.3 TurboDiesel offered for $8,000 in Phoenix, AZ via craigslist.

The Big Alfa: 1980 Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 2.5 TD

The product planners at Alfa Romeo decided to borrow naming technique from MG with the release of an executive sedan called the Alf Romeo Alfa 6 in 1979.  It used the classic Alfa Romeo setup of a engine mated to a rear wheels that were suspended by a de Dion tube in the back, but it used a conventional gearbox instead of a transaxle like the Alfetta (Italian for little Alfa).  Find this 1980 Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 Diesel here on eBay bidding for $2,501 with 1 day to go, located in Scarsdale, NY.
