The second generation Oldsmobile Cutlass started life as a compact, but sold in greater numbers when it was put on an intermediate chassis starting in 1964. The new car rode on a body-on-frame chassis instead of the old unibody, but its new added mass brought refinement and character. Find this 1965 Oldsmobile F-85 offered for $16,000 in North Hills, CA via craigslist. Seller submission from Gus.This F-85 is more than your typical Cutlass sitting around in someone's driveway -- the seller has done an extensive amount of work, and says it runs like a top and stops great! It appears that almost every inch of the car has been touched, starting with an American Autowire kit, new interior, CPP products stage 4 pro touring suspension. 3-pt seat belts...the list goes on.
Under the hood is the original 330 cubic inch V8 mated to a powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission and a 10 bolt rear with 3.23 gears. The engine was rated at 250 horsepower when new, but has a few additional bolt-ons that should help for a few more.

I don't need 20s on something of that vintage, you can go to 18s if you absolutely need them to clear the brakes you're running, otherwise ought not be bigger than 17s.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, it's a good start, and the CPP stuff is decent, but you're not gonna outrun anyone with a factory wheezemotor in front of a Powerglide.
Man just appreciate a car dude ! No need to knock his tranny or rims !
Deletegreetings, @Sickfive cutty - thanks for stopping in - @mrkwong is/was a person of strong opinions, sorely missed around here lately - i clicked to see what wheels were being discussed, look to be American Racing-ish, yes? - i'd agree they are a good style choice, but also agree i'd personally prefer them in a more traditional, rubber-revealing size
Deletelooks like a work in progress being shrugged off - got to wonder whether the engine, trans, etc. were next up for upgrade - personally, since i can't drive very fast around here, nor are there stoplights to peel out from, that drivetrain would suit me fine
as would repainting it a shiny, light, minty fresh blue-green
I love these cars, for some stupid reason, though the later tunnel-window ones are really my favorite. This looks like a nice car that's a few steps away from being whatever the next owner wants it to be, fancy cruiser or...something else.
ReplyDeleteOlds advertised 315 horsepower, 360 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm for the "Cutlass" 330 V8, i.e., with 4-barrel. The transmission was a "Jetaway" aka ST300 rather than the Chevrolet powerglide.
The dealer catalog at Old Car Brochures quotes a 4-door V8 "shipping" weight of 3161 for this car. That's in between a new Civic and the lightest new Accord. What that means, I don't know.
I always like to bring these back to original, or add minor restomod's that can be easily undone. Too bad the rear fenders were messed up to fit 20" rims.
ReplyDelete2 speed auto trans? Dat don't make my dreams come true.
