Okay folks, time to get philosophical over here and talk about some of the changes happening to the collector/classic/junk car market right now. Two big things -- the first is that craiglist is introducing a nominal $5 fee to post cars for sale and the second thing is that Hemmings is finally responding to BringaTrailer.com and is introducing their own auction system. 
Everybody thinks that his/her Craigslist is the best for finding cheap classics...but you'd probably be wrong, unless you live in a box under the stairs in the corner of the basement of the house half a block down the street from Jerry's Bait shop. You know the place. Anyway, for the Coffee Brake this week, I want you guys to tell me why Albuquarky...Alebequeque....Albaqwerty (which is actually a kind of one handed keyboard that makes it easier for you to find pictures of Jessica Alba) ...no, I'm talking about the city somewhere in the southwest known as Alburquequey. Frick. Albuquerque. I had to use spell check.

The E30 generation BMW 3-series offers one of the better combinations of decent power, fun chassis, manual gearbox, and style for very basic money. BMW built 2.3 million of the compact executive sedans over the years, so supply should outlast demand for a few more decades. If you want my opinion, the one to get (aside from the murderously expensive M3) is the post facelift (1987+) 325is two-door which is what you are looking at here...but things aren't always as they seem. Thanks to the fracking revolution, gas has never been cheaper. So, you owe yourself a big old American Barge from the 1970's. At this point, it won't break the bank - at least in fuel costs. Here's a sampling of Land Yachts available in the Seattle area on Craigslist. 
If you are anything like me, you spend a lot of time surfing Craigslist for cars, trucks & free furniture. Probably too much time, if you ask my wife, but that is an issue for me and my therapist to work out. Anyway, Craigslist browsing is an often fun distraction from other things, but recently (okay, this happened a few weeks ago, but it took a while to publish the story) things got better -- much better. Craigslist had added additional searchable input fields to the top of the search menu that include worthless options like paint color, size, and type, but they have also included a transmission, driven wheels, fuel and title status filters. Halleluiah, I can find manual transmission equipped Mini Coopers, Supra Mk IV, Land Rover Defenders and Kenworth trucks all in one window!!
If you spend as much time as we do surfing the internet for cheap used cars, you may have noticed a fairly significant change to the long lived craigslist format. Images now appear first in the ad with text following - we aren't sure if we like the new format. It does still allow you to add your own pictures via HTML, but we fear change and this is new/different... |
