I'm going to say something and risk the wrath of all kinds of folks, but here it goes: The Infiniti M30 is the best looking rag top to ever come outta Japan. There. Said and done. Find this 1992 Infiniti M30 Convertible offered for $2,200 in East Lansing, MI via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.
I could just make some obnoxious statement and walk away from it, but I'm going to follow this up. Many folks will argue that something like the ND MX-5 is a better looking car, and they'd be right because all things considered a majority of folks off the street would pick it over the M30, but the ND (and most Japanese convertibles, 350Z, 370Z, MR2 Spyder, Celica) have a level of fussiness to the design that just isn't the case with the M30. All kinds of angles, extra lines, and compound curves in the sheet metal...nobody really wants those.
The M30 has this wonderful flow to its shape starting at the front and shooting to the back, giving the car a very dynamic look, like a piece of sandstone carved by a river. It is also almost entirely chrome free and wears its 80s shade of Pearl white with pride. If you are going to drive an 80s box, this is the one to drive every day.

I guess it's up to me to be the first: Are you on crack? That's a pretty car in the same bland way that a Toyota Avalon is.

DeleteWell, styling is always a matter of taste. This car certainly does not offend me, and has a nice clean look from many angles. What I can certainly say is that this thing looks like a screaming deal, at $2200 with less than 100k on the odo.

Okay, now I feel silly, in my haste to heap praise on the little M30 I didn't know they were an ASC creation. Make sense when I think about it now...but I am WAY more sober now than when I wrote this article.

DeleteYou know, I've seen many of these in person and while they are a classic, I find the design to be a bit too derivative of British/Italian cars of the era. I think it took the success of the 70s/80s for Japanese designers to figure out they didn't need to just copy everybody else and they could create interesting designs that lead to some cool looking stuff (NSX anyone?).

The Infiniti M30 is an example of why Infiniti never quite matched Lexus in the US market.

Has the subtle/bland style of a bmw, but, put away your torx and triple squares folks, this here is really just a nice nissan and only requires 10,12,14 and 18 mm ratchet wrenches, and they throw in a nice vg30 that is basically a truck engine. So it outlasts that german dreck and is cheap to fix. Act now and we will throw in " im not old and white and/or a young gangbanger" street cred absolutely free!
