It is Wednesday so that means another time for another episode of DT's Mid Week Match-Up, where we find cars for our readers. This week's MWMU request comes from Mark J, who knows exactly what he is looking for, he just needs some help finding it -- specifically a 1990-91 Audi Quattro Coupe.
Mark is looking for a clean and unmolested Audi 90 Quattro Coupe in the range of $2500-$7500 and is willing to have it shipped. A quick search of eBay and I found this 1991 Audi 91 offered here
for $4,500 buy-it-now located in Hudson, Quebec, Canada....but I bet you guys can find some better examples. Comments below.

ReplyDeleteI too wanted one of these forever---I still remember the shiny red brand new 1991 model staring at me at the local VW/Audi/Porsche/Subaru dealership when I would go there in high school for parts for my GTi 16v . I loved them so much, eventually I owned one. For about 6 months. Never meet your heros.
ReplyDeleteAs a certified Audiholic, I love these Coupes and have too many. The example in AK is very nice and at a pretty reasonable price. Though I'm not sure if they have to use salt up yonder due to the volume of snow...
ReplyDeleteI have a pretty darn nice 1990 Pearl Coupe which is in good shape. Stock apart from upgraded lights (which are a weak point for all of the Audis of the era). Gray interior which is in good shape overall. She has a few items which could be addressed and I'll save the details for a potential buyer.
She is not listed and I was planning on doing so in the near future. I think somewhere north of $2500 is reasonable depending on what I address/include in the sale. I have plenty of parts if needed as well. She is located in Denver

DeleteHere is the problem.... You can only get the Coupe in a normally aspirated engine. (Although the 20V with the "bag-o-snakes" exhaust manifold would sound glorious)
ReplyDeleteSo in no time at all you will be planning to head down that rabbit hole of finding & installing a 20V turbo engine.
So you may want to extend your search timeframe to find one already modified.
Rene---exactly why I sold mine. The awesome body wrote checks the engine just couldn't cash.
Delete7500 is close to the bottom of the AAN repowered CQ market. You'll be looking at a driver with mostly stock AAN stuff and an 01a (Basically an early 3b S2) but lots of headroom for bolt on upgrades. The problem is finding one for sale!
DeleteAgreed on most points but, there are options apart from the S2 conversion. European Car has a great vintage article on an owner who converted to a 3B or AAN then a swap for a either a 3.6 or 4.2 V8 (can't remember)! 034 Motorsports offers a turbo kit for the 7A which a friend of mine owned their old test mule.
DeleteFor certain folks, the stock Coupes are great and mine have been reliable as hell (3 currently and 5 total). They perform better in the snow than my 200 20V Avant (and are slightly heavier).
One other benefit of the Coupes is the built quality and safety. Aluminum side protection beams have saved quite a few folks from the grave.
As with any vehicle, I would definitely drive one before committing!

Here is a turbo conversion that was not done very well in my opinion. However it could be a good project if it could be had for under $4k and the engine is good.

The owner is delusional that it is worth that money while the car is still in an unfinished state.
