You didn't think we'd let another Thorsday go by without posting some wild Swedish custom...did you? The Saab 96 was a modernized version of the 93, which was essentially just an updated 92...and if you keep digging in the Saab historical archives you will eventually find that the 96 traces its roots all the way back to the Ur-Saab concept created in 1945. The 96 was only available as a 2-door sedan, but some hacksaw wielding customizer created this convertible version...and it doesn't look bad at all. Find this 1972 Saab 96 Cabriolet offered for $29,000 via swedishmotors.com in Marietta, PA.
This might be the only convertible Saab 96 you'll ever see, but it certainly isn't the best priced custom for sale...in fact...it is ludicrously overpriced. $30k will get you into the price range of all sorts of mint condition classics...but...if you really want a Saab 96 drop top, there isn't much competition.
Under the hood is a 1.7 liter V4 shared with the European market Ford Taunus which was rated at 65 horsepower and gives a top speed of in excess of 90 mph. The true Saab enthusiast will want the available 2-stroke engine for its inherent wackiness, but the V4 is far more useable on a day-to-day basis.
Of course this 96 is equipped with Saab's freewheeling 4-speed manual gearbox with steering column mounted shifter.

I love Saab 96's and I'm not offended by 'parade cars', but this looks like a Dutch wooden shoe! For $30K,one could buy a fleet of '96s which could include a 2-stroke Monte Carlo and have change left over to pick up a Sonnet.
