7k: Not a Morgan, Still a Midget: 1970 MG Midget with Arkley Body

While some custom-bodied Sprites are built to sober up its giggly maw, the kit on this mechanically similar Midget discards its classic sporting lines and spoofs the design language of the quintessential British roadster. Its odd proportions are jarring. The seller calls it "Morgan-like," but it looks more like a Meyers Manx dune buggy spliced with an MG TF. Like it or love it, this award-winning Midget is in exceptional shape and is offered for a price easier to swallow than most of the cars it imitates. About 900 Arkley kits were produced in England during and shortly after the Midget's production run. Since then, the molds and ownership rights have shuffled between various owners and are now owned by Peter May Engineering. Front and rear components can be bought for £725 - a low price for professionally built body parts.

Arkley benefits include a lower weight and increased width to accommodate wider tires, a perk this seller has chosen not to take advantage of. Everything except the kit and custom side-exit exhaust is original or refurbished. The four-speed Midget also has the following new parts: clutch, brakes, radiator, carburetor, wiring, tires, top, carpet, door panels, window cranks, and dashboard.

This car has become a caricature - a visually obtrusive homage to English sports cars that would be fun to take to the Republican National Convention. Whatever the destination, this Midget will surely draw smiles and waves from anyone with a pulse. Unless it's a Morgan driver.
