DT COW Commenter of the Week: El Camino vs Shooting Brake

It has been a while since we have honored a commenter with our sporadic COW (Commenter of the Week) award, but this next comment was just too good to pass up.

While car = malaise do {
If (length behind front seat < 6') then {car=shooting brake}
If (length behind front seat >=6') then {car=el x-mino}

Commenter Of The Week: Torque Steering Sex Offender

Welcome to another edition of DT's coveted, despised, sporadic and always gluten free Commenter of the Week (COW!) award.  Picking a COW award from the list of noteworthy comments is always a dubious task -- mostly because there is just too much good stuff out there.  But, this week one commenter made me spit coffee all over my monitor twice, first with a crack about the blue/silver wizard wagon above, purchase of this vehicle should automatically enroll the buyer into a sex offender watch list -- and later with a comment on the torque steering Shelby quartet.

DT COW: Commenter Of The Week

Welcome to another edition of DT's coveted, despised, sporadic and always gluten free Commenter of the Week (COW!) award.  Recently, the comments have been so good that to pick a COW award would be to disparage the rest of the comments, but in the past week there has been one commenter who has knocked it out of the park...many times.  You all know who we are talking about...and this week we are giving away an actual physical prize...but don't worry, it is total crap and for tax purposes you can declare zero dollars.

Commenter of the Week: Quality and Quantity

The volume and quality of comments on the pages of Daily Turismo have increased so rapidly recently that I've had a hard time giving out the temporally maligned COW award.  In the past, I've been quick to hand it out to the best zingers, one liners and belly ticklers.  Today, however, I want to award a commenter for a thoroughly detailed and exhaustive analysis of a featured car and point out that this commenter did more to evaluate to car that I did in the original feature.  Just an excerpt:
Overall, there was quite obviously a load of solid work put into this car. Looks like they took the conservative, stock-ish approach with the engine which with the non-squirter, skinny rod block and tiny turbo is a good thing. Just get the CBV situation figured out, throw an airbox on there or a heat-shielded cone and enjoy the other guy's investment for the next 100k or so.

DT Commenter of the Week: Gold Fever

Welcome to another edition of DT's coveted, despised, sporadic and always lactose intolerant Commenter of the Week (COW!) award.  Many times the COW award goes to someone who has shared a cool story, interesting anecdote, but today the prized honor goes to a simple zinger style statement about the crazy Chevy Suburban limo from yesterday.
You sure would need a lot of stick figures for the back window.

Commenter Of The Week: In Russia, Stick Shifts You

The recent Bomberismo feature on the a Tupolev 95 (commonly called the Tupolev Tu-95, but that seems redundant, like saying Chevrolet Chevy Corvette) generated a fair bit of conversation, mostly around the logistics of getting the Bear into the USA and I have it on good authority that several of our readers are James Bond villains who need a flying super-fortress.  One commenter, however, asked us a favor...
OK. Let's get two things straight. First, the phrase 'little old lady airmen' is the funniest thing I've heard all day. Second, I would like to place my order for a Soviet Red, Size Medium, T-Shirt with the Gas Nozzle and SIckle emblem. Let me know when it ships and I will provide CC info.
And we figured...why not?

COW: Democratization of Classic Car Ownership

Every website with a healthy commenter base claims they have the best readers/commenters.  Unfortunately, most automotive related website comment sections are filled with the meandering invective of 15 year old kids and pedants.  Not here.  Here at the Daily Turismo, we truly do have the best commenters in the world.  This week's COW award goes to a regular contributor who writes:

In that third photo above, what I find most interesting is that the P1800 looks right at home alongside the Pagoda and the Speedster. Unless you are a classic car slut, you really can't tell that one is an order of magnitude more expensive than the other. It reinforces my belief that you really don't need to be bursting at the seams with $$$ in order to enjoy a nice old classic (though it doesn't hurt). I find this democratization of classic car ownership to be refreshing.

DT COW: Commenter of the Week: Sorry, Mom, I'm a Little Loaded

If you are a regular DT reader not under a restraining order to avoid any and all contact with the Daily Turismo, you may have noticed the recent changes to our commenting rules - specifically the implementation of the Commenting Commandments.  A keen eyed reader posted a comment in response to the glut of image conscious cars being sold on ebay and was sure to literally adhere to Commandment I:
Is anybody just a poor old broke gearhead any more? The e-Bay write up? Too slick by half. Everyone is copyrighted, has a logo and has ambience and image. I'm sure it's an impressive build as per the "Irvine" Car and Coffee crowd; hell, I'd like to have the thing myself. But, at my gut level, it feels like a poseur. Who is going to end up buying this? Some guy with an "authentic" surf shop down in Orange County who started his (successful) business on dad's money and who, himself, is steeped in ambience and image. Probably will put a "Harvest" bumper sticker in the rear window next August for some real OC street cred...Sorry, mom, I'm a little loaded.

COW: Commenter Of The Week: Don't Drink And Drive A Brougham

It should come as no surprise that the writers of the Daily Turismo imbibe in the fermented fruits of civilization from time to time.  Sometimes at a local bar, but more often, if the stuff that gets written on these pages isn't a fine testimony, it in front of the computer in the confines of our own homes.  This is certainly a better place to sit down with a fine single malt, Maltese vino or malt liquor, not only because of the draconian punishment for exceeding the arbitrary state mandated BAC limits, but also because you are much less likely to crash into to poor guy heading home to his family from a late shift.  One regular commenter posted the following story about his neighbor doing some late night hedge clipping:
"My alcoholic neighbor across the street had one of these when I was growing up. He got really drunk one night and drove it through our yard, our neighbor's yard, their neighbor's yard and finally got stuck about 5 houses down. He continued gunning it, getting it hopelessly buried, until the police finally arrived."

DT COW: Commenter Of The Week: Glove Box Full O Cash

Welcome to the Commenter of the Week award, where we congratulate our readers/commenters for their contributions to the site.  Today's winner started with the statement
"OK, I love you guys at DT, but I really think you have "jumped the shark" with this one."
which was enough to get strong consideration for DT COW, but sealed the victory with the statement:
"$15,995? Really? Granted, it appears to be an excellent example in mint condition. But, I wouldn't pay $15,995 unless it came with $15,000 in the glovebox."

DT COW: Commenter of the Week: Fun and Stupid

We had a fantastic comment about the Dodge A100 Sportsman conversion van from a reader:
It would be fun to paint it red, build a floor underneath the top deck and put scale model passengers up there like a British double decker.  Wait, I got the words "fun" and "stupid" mixed up again.

DT COW: Commenter Of The Week: Mining The Interwebs And Sharing Gems

Recently we've given the DT COW award to a comment that has given us a good belly laugh, but today we want to highlight an insightful and thought provoking comment from one of our regulars:
[E]ven better would be.... [T]o uncover the sweet spots considering age, performance, maintenance, depreciation, etc. I know this kind of information can be mined from brand forums and other places, but many of those get so bogged down with posturing fanboys, smug wrenchers, impenetrable jibber-jabber and excruciating micro-detail = useless time-suck. Finding an audience and giving them filtered, targeted, useful, thoughtful and *compressed* information and analysis is the best of what blogs do. It's great to see DT becoming more than just a list of cool cars.

DT COW: Commenter Of The Week: Upside-Down

The Volvo C202 Laplander we posted earlier this week generated some enthusiasm from our readers because of its clean condition and sweet trailer.  One commenter did point out that a similar car was also featured on the popular vintage car website 'Bring a Trailer" on the same day: "BaT is listing a Volvo C202 for under 4k, and DT is listing a Volvo C202 for 10.5k in nicer condition...What's going on here, my world is turned upside down!"

DT Commenter of the Week: Flat-6 Riddle Solved

We've featured our fair share of engine swaps on these pages, but none as perplexing as the seemly downgraded GD-chassis Subaru Impreza that was powered by a SVX flat-6.  Thankfully, one of our readers was paying attention and posted the following comment: "The reason for the powertrain swap is due to classing rules for rally. In the US the main rally organization classes cars based on 2wd/4wd and NA/Forced Induction.  So by putting in a NA motor it allows them to compete in the NA class. It is also a requirement for novice drivers to start their career in a non turbo vehicle. So it's not to uncommon to see teams drop a NA motor into an impreza chassis."

DT COW: Commenter Of The Week: BaT For Poor People

We are still trying to figure out what to do with the Facebook and El Twitter, and assume we can just outlast all this web 2.0 nonsense in the same way we conquered hula hoops, inflation and skinny jeans for men.  Anyway, we have been getting DT neophytes via the Facebook and recently got the following posting on our wall: "Is this like Bring a Trailer for poor people? Right up my alley."

DT COW: Commenter of the Week: Cops & Masers

This morning's featured Maserati Quattroporte isn't for the faint of heart and nothing underscores this point better than the story from a commenter about a free 4Porte that was rejected!
Back in the day, when I was a big east coast city cop, the narcotics squad confiscated one of these in a raid. It was parked in the headquarters garage for a short time when the police commissioner took notice of it and decided that it would make a great ride for him; after all he WAS the police commissioner. When they took it to a local Italian car shop for some "minor" work, the bill was $3800! The boss went back to his plain-Jane Ford Crown Vic. I spent 31 years on that job, loved every minute!
