Racer and driving instructor Reeves Callaway bolted a hodgepodge turbo system on a BMW 320i and loaned the car to Car and Driver journalist Don Sherman who wrote a one page article on the beast.  At the time, the number of folks who had the capability to turbocharge a car without ventilating the engine block was extremely limited and in 1977 Callaway Cars was incorporated to develop aftermarket turbo kits for the every man. Several years later, Callaway worked side-by-side wtih OEMs to develop turbo systems for BMW, Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi,  Mercedes-Benz and Chevrolet, many of which maintained factory backed warranty.  Callaway eventually became world renowned for his bonkers twin turbo Corvettes, and prices for these boosted machines are not cheap...but they are certainly cheaper than something like a Shelby...but how long with that last? Callaway Turbocharged: 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI

A brand new Volkswagen Golf will set you back at least $20,910 before taxes, license, registration, etc etc and a GTI starts at $26,415 and something called a Golf R will cost at least $39,785...and I'm certain they are nice cars with all of the safety, convenience, and Apple car play that you'll ever need...but they don't have a golf ball shifter knob and will be worth 1/2 of what you paid in 3 years...so I'm going to recommend a classic Golf for half the price to start.  Find this 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI offered for $15000 near Portland, OR via craigslist.

Underapreciated Front Driver: 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege

The 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege was the first offering from the Mazdaspeed name plate.  It was to be Mazda's hot rod shop ala Mercedes AMG, BMW M-series, Ford's SVT, etc.  The Mazdaspeed was spawned from the righteous handling 2001-2 Protege MP3 model.  The MP3 name was derived from the audio MP3 file (think Napster) which was new at the time and the car was outfitted with a wacky Kenwood headunit that would do somersaults every time the car was turned on.  Well known tuner Callaway Cars was brought in to turbo charge the MP3 140 hp 2.0 engine.  The boosted engine was good for 170 hp, but developed a horrible reputation for throwing rods if you upped the boost past 10 psi.  Find this 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege for sale in Waterbury, CT for $2,900 via craigslist.

Reeves Callaway was an aspiring race car driver who ended up working as an instructor at Bob Bondurant's racing school in the 1970s and later fitted a turbo system on a BMW 320i and loaned the car to Car and Driver journalist Don Sherman who wrote a one page article on it and told him "you should do this for a living".  A few years later and Callaway Cars was building some of the most bonkers stuff based on Corvette, but in 1994 they put their magic touch on the B-Body Impala.  Find this 1995 Callaway Impala SS offered for $12,000 in Canton, MA via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

 Use of the Quadrifoglio (four leaf clover) on an Alfa Romeo started on racing cars in the 1920s, but modern examples (such as 164, and Spider) use the emblem to denote a high end version of a particular car.
