Welcome to another edition of DT's cure for the Monday morning blues -- What Am I? We
find a random picture of a car and you get to guess what it is. Last week's 1977 Mercury Cougar was quickly located by Chris Keen -- good job, time to find something harder.
As difficult as this should be for any single person, a DT reader quorum should solve this in no time.

ReplyDeleteI think the Isuzu Impulse took more time than usual. Same with the Rod Hall Dodge.
DeleteInteresting! The Impulse took 3.5 hours. I remember that one; it was a great one! Tricky, because I'm sure there were tons of us that knew exactly what it was, but like me, were stuck on the idea it was a Dodge. The Ram took 4.5 hours and was also a really great one. I wasn't aware of the Rod Hall edition, until now. That's one for the old database, for sure. So there's never been one where nobody guessed it? I wonder what all of the factors are and how much today's accessible technology factors into it here on DT. I know when I used to run a game that was all about that (guessing the car or whatnot), that became such an issue that I eventually just gave up. Which is a bummer because instead of people learning new things, they just Googled it and then forgot it instantly. Sometimes I'd rerun the same image and the folks that guessed it right before would have no idea what it was. Ah well, a sign of the times.

ReplyDeleteThose controls (Climate and headlights) could have come straight from my Dad's old 1994 Passat GLX, so I knew mid-90's VW, and then from there it was an easy guess as to which VW would have had armrests for the seats. ;-)

ReplyDeleteVery good! But it's not a car with fake anything or Mustang whatnot. That car is a show car only in that it was up for auction and it's beautiful. I believe it's been repainted that lovely green color. The car pictured is sporting a tonneau cover, but that doesn't make it a concept car if that's what you're implying.
ReplyDeleteThe SIATA Daina was produced in hardtop and convertible versions in a number somewhere around 200, from 1950-1958. The company was a coach builder, starting in 1926. The Daina was based on the Fiat 1400, came with a variety of 4-cylinder engines (generally around 65 hp) and you could even get a 5-speed transmission! A few even came to States, where several of them got the Cobra treatment (they slammed a giant American V8 into it).
It's valuable because of all the usual reasons; it's Italian, it's super rare and it doesn't hurt that it's a convertible. But it isn't any more rare than say, a Ferrari 212 and nowhere near as rare as a Fiat 8V, both of which are worth far more.

ReplyDeleteIt has a 289 because the Fiat motors in them were commonly replaced. As rare as they are, I found a parts car 2 serial numbers from mine and 8miles away in a barn! I think it has changed hands 2 times since I had it....I have an original set of 4 bumperettes if anybody needs them.....
That's cool! I believe I misunderstood that you were implying that the Daina was never more than a concept.

For some reason my knee-jerk reaction also went towards a GM truck based product. Something about that silver metallic paint, the radius of the panel edge, and the huge gap to the overly tinted glass just screams Government Motors to me.
DeleteFantastic guesses, both of you! Heh heh, x-rays. I think this illustrates a problem with the What Am I challenges. It's got to be such a tiny bit and there's so little information that it's nearly impossible. How long before you just see a square of painted metal and you're supposed correctly guess it? Of course, that remains to be seen, now doesn't it!?! This one still remains a bit of mystery. My guess is that it will be correctly identified before tomorrow.

That's either shoddy fit and finish... OR it's a window edge that opens inward. Still hasn't helped me figure out what the deuce this thing is.

But I still have a feeling somebody will identify it correctly. Either way, I think this one's set that new record. Of course, it doesn't necessarily make it a good one...

Here's the same picture, with a bit more visual information in it. I'd be surprised if you guys don't get it in less than an hour. But who knows, maybe this isn't enough either. We'll find out!

no clue what your clue tells me, but the gap at the bottom of the window signals sliding side door - minivan of some stripe - and the pinstripes say "old" - oh, maybe the taurus says "ford", so windstar / aerostar?

Maybe there's more than one; I'll leave that up to you to tell me! But, I'm thinking of one in particular. I know for a fact that all of you know it but like the old #21 above, it will be interesting how fast you guys connect the dots.
