To start this party, I'm posting this BMW 3200 CS (1962-1965), but specifically I am looking for more coupes/sedans/wagons with the Hofmeister kink/kick/knick.
Standard contest rules are as follows:
1. Only one car per comment (be sure to hit the refresh button on your browser before you post in case someone else has posted since you loaded the page). Do not nest the replies, just reply to the main post -- if you reply to someone elses comment it should be in reference to his comment and not a pop-up headlight submission.
2. You can post again, but only after someone else posts another car.
3. The contest will end when K2 Mystery Car is happy with the size of the list.
4. One submission per generation of car.
5. Each car must be a running/driving car (no clay model prototypes) and at least two must have been built of that particular car (no one-offs).
6. No anonymous submissions -- pick a name with the Name/URL dropdown.

DeleteTo check image size before posting, just open it in a new browser tab (using only the url of the image itself). You'll see pretty clearly if it's bigger than our site can handle.
Thanks CFlo. I did open the image in a new window. However, I neglected to then "click" in the image. My Firefox window scales for display, but when you click on the image, it resizes to actual size.

Oh, man - GREAT bike! I used to have an early 90s GSXR1100. It was also a fantastic bike. I don't know about yours, but mine was clearly built with the intent on removing every tiny bit of weight possible. I overtightened -by hand- the oil drain once and cracked the pan. Never had a similar issue with the VFR I had concurrently. But then, the 1100 was oh so much more fun to ride. Unless I had a long ride, that is. Then it was definitely VFR time, which was as comfortable as the GSXR was fast.
DeleteThat Elantra is a surprisingly great deal for the money. The Koreans continue to bring it. Obviously, you don't drive them all (at once). Is one for your significant other?
I've had a few carburetor-fueled GSX-R's, and a few other bikes... Had a late 80s GSX-R 750, an early 90s 750, a 2003 1000 and a 2004 1000 before this bike, as far as GSX-R's go. Huge difference the fuel injection makes, even compared to the best flat-slide-equipped side drafts. I've got to say, the bikes have improved in comfort & ergonomics more than anything in the past 20 years. I rode mine on a 2000+ mile, 36-hour round-trip road trip to the southern states. Didn't hesitate to use the bike the very next day for running errands around town. I also had a similar problem with the oil drain plug, thanks to overzealous tightening by a previous owner. Besides the GSX-R's, I've also had a bunch of other great Japanese bikes like a 1985 VF700F Interceptor, '82 VF750S Sabre, and about two dozen UJM's of all shapes and sizes. The mid-1970's Kawasaki KZ900's have to be my favorites of those.
DeleteThe Elantra was meant to replace my S.O.'s previous vehicle. She had a 2007 Corolla LE, and the Elantra serves admirably as a suitable replacement. Did a little research and found the Koreans to be a great value. My only complaint, the rear shocks being junk, was easily remedied with a set of KYB "Gas-A-Just" shocks.
With heated electric clothing, the bikes once served as my year-round commuter transportation. In NYC - brutal - I know. Then, slowly the Hilux became the commuter/daily driver on rainy and snowy days. Now, a Prius. Gotta say that, as a hybrid-electric it's very fuel-efficient when it comes to sitting in traffic for two hours straight.
I hear your pain, brother. My VFR was the last of my bikes, replaced by sports cars. Not quite the same and I still look wistfully when a bike goes by. But the time period where riding is comfortable without a lot of fancy gear in the Northeast is just too short for me. I stowed my NA for two months and I'm out driving it again today. I would've been hesitant to do that on my motorcycle.

DeleteI believe so. Like the Sonnet, there's a distinction between the lower angle being part of the fender (a "haunch", if you will) and not part of the pillar, as it was designed by Wilhelm Hofmeister. If a majority disagree with me, speak up!

DeleteI haven't been commanded by El Jefe to police, only to indicate when I thought the Twister was all unraveled. But it occurs to me that it might be helpful to get feedback and potentially discuss/argue it out. Nobody wants negative feedback, but still; you can't learn from silence in this case. And, of course, it's not just my opinion that counts. What do you guys say, more feedback or just keep on trucking without comment?
DeleteKeep on truckin' seems to be the consensus. Just know that if I don't agree with your assessment, I'm putting the car in the Rule Benders list and not including that one in the Leader Board. I suppose you'll just have to argue your case at a later time.

Not sure what you mean by "project car series"? I agree with your ownership philosophy of driving and doing minor fixes. The downside of owning a totally pristine collector car of whatever type, means you will be reluctant to ever drive it. I have one of those (not the tii) and its life consists of being a garage queen.

Brent- I disagree (only in a small part though). I like making them pristine and then driving them down to a # 2-3 condition. Still mechanically right, but with a 'restored patina' of daily use. Then, its up to the next guy to re-re-restore it back up to #1 and do it all over again. I think that has been a well stated philosophy of an ultimate car guru, swami Jay Leno. Who is probably (or should be) reading DT under some pseudonym that references some obscure steam engine part that the rest of us wouldn't notice
DeleteOkay, now I'm with you. I actually commented back in June on your der Schmetterling post. In terms of projects on an '02 you might want to profile as part of a series, I can suggest the following:
Delete- upgrade to 5 speed (a very popular upgrade than many '02 owners have completed or are contemplating)
- relocation of battery to trunk
- rebuilding and powder coating of rear subframe
- suspension mods

Pfft, Hofmeister Kink indeed... should have been called the Bertone Kink. In any case, my thoughts on the dog-leg kinked C-pillar, as I call it:
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, BMW and Lexus have perfected it. Subaru and Nissan are trailing not too far behind. The perfect size is about 4 or 5 inches, hehe. The BMW's kink seems to be usually at a 45-60 degree angle, as seen on the E39. The Lexus usually has it at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the ground. Some have the kink completely made up of plastic garnish or sail panel, such as the 2001-07 Impreza/WRX and 2002-06 Altima. Some have the size formula wrong; the current Honda CR-V has a kink that is much larger. Likewise, some examples of cars that have a kink that's too small include the current Acura MDX, 2007-12 Lexus ES, and the Mercedes-Benz W204:
