Thunder-Stang: 1989 Ford Mustang 3.8 SC

Modified Ford Mustangs are a dime a dozen so it takes a lot to come across one that is out of the ordinary.  Ford's Thunderbird Super Coupe was available from 1989-1995 with a 3.8 pushrod V-6 huffed on by a Eaton M90 supercharger that was good for up to 230 hp and 330 lbs of torque.  The Ford 3.8 SC engine made good power, but never seemed garner the cult following that the similar displacement Buick Grand National turbo engine did.  Today's Stang takes the road less traveled and has the unusual V6 engine swap into the state highway patrol favored notchback body style.  Find this 1989 Ford Mustang Notchback for sale in Beacon Falls, CT for $5,500 via craigslist.

Anyone who craves affordable performance should be familiar with the Fox body Mustang, but the vast majority of cars for sale are hacked up flat-black customs, or ridden into the ground 4-banger versions.  The one to get is obviously a low mile, V8 Fox with original paint and for a decent price, but they don't fall out of trees, you've got to keep your eyes open...or have a dedicated tips email where folks like Adam F can send in the good stuff...like this 1980 Ford Mustang offered for $7,500 in Monterey, CA via craigslist.

10k: Not Another Notch On The Bed Post: 1987 Ford Mustang LX Notchback

The 3rd generation Ford Mustang, known internally as the Fox platform, was built from 1979 to 1993 in coupe, hatchback and convertible trims.  Interestingly enough in the classic (pre-73) market, the fastbacks demand premium money (as they did when new) and the coupes (notchback) are cheap, but the relationship is flipped in the Fox platform.  The notchback LX Fox mustangs have become collectible in their own right and are worth a few more bucks than the average (more expensive when new) hatchback GT/GLX stang. Regardless, a nice LX 5.0 notchback is a modern classic priced well today -- expect significant appreciation in the next 10 years.  Find this 1987 Ford Mustang LX notchback for sale in Roseville, CA currently bidding for $6,100 via ebay.

15k: 1964 VW 1500S Type 3, Notchback Survivor

In the late '50s, Volkswagen was high on its wave of success with its little WWII-era Type 1 (Beetle) and derivative commercial / utility vehicle the Type 2 (aka Bus, Van, Microbus, Kombi, Transporter...). But someone deep in the bowels of Wolfsburg realized that if growth and success were to continue, the company needed a bigger, more modern, less obtuse looking car to stay relevant. Enter the Type 3, which retained VWs trademark rear-mounted aircooled boxer four, and torsion bar suspension but was otherwise a fairly 'normal' midsize car. The styling has aged gracefully and today these shoebox veedubs are classics in their own right. We've found a very nice, low mileage survivor Notchback sedan, a variant never officially imported to the US. Find it here on oldbug.com, for $15000 asking. Location is unspecified but we are betting it's in Colorado based on the rear plate.
