1968 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

The Jeep, the Land Rover, the Land Cruiser. This is the classic triumvirate of small, capable, 4-wheel-drive vehicle that originated in WWII and was iterated upon ad infinitum thereafter, forever and ever, amen. James May did a witty and insightful analysis of this whole genre in a recent episode of James May's Cars of the People on BBC - check it out if you haven't already. My favorite of the three happens to be the one with the best track record for reliability, but I really love its quirks and faults as well. Find this 1968 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser for sale in Scottsdale, AZ for $36,900 via craigslist, and also here on eBay with bidding over $10k, reserve not met with 1 day to go. This post is part of DT's 2016 Birthday Celebration of 100 cars; enjoy the ride!

Time to Pass the Torch: 1976 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

Update, Nov. 24 2015: The asking price on this sweet little FJ40 has been lowered to $15k. Check it out...

From Nov. 17th 2015: Toyota's little FJ40 Land Cruiser was not first in the line of offroad vehicles from Japan's #1 automaker, and it certainly wasn't the last, but it was one of the most prolific. Out of the wide variety of all-terrain vehicles - from farm implement simple to cushy marshmallow luxurious - the FJ40 leans heavily towards the former end of the spectrum, which might help to explain its perennial classic status. This is the generation where Toyota beat Jeep at its own game, and if you want one, one of our longtime friends has a great example for sale. Find this 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser (FJ40) for sale in Newbury Park, CA for $17,500 via Craigslist. Seller Submission from Andrew.

15k: 1975 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

If you think the modern Toyota FJ Cruiser is cool - first of all, we agree in terms of form factor and capability, but disagree in the styling department. Toyota was trying to invoke their iconic FJ40 Land Cruiser with the chunky round-headlight design but somehow missed the mark - maybe it's the giant sail-like c-pillars? Regardless, in terms of cool factor an original FJ40 can't be beat. They are simple, solid, torquey and built to last virtually forever in any environment (as long as there isn't any salty water nearby). A nice example can be an eye-catching classic Daily Turismo, such as this stock, clean, smog exempt 1975 FJ40 being sold on ebay for $18.5k Buy It Now in Santa Monica, CA.
