we find a random picture of a car and you get to guess what it is. Last week, I posted a fuzzy and unrecognizable photo of an old Buick and of course someone chimed in the comments with the answer. Today...identifying the OE will be a bit easier, but determining the model will be tricky. Just what am I anyway? Updated with answer below. .jpg)

RyanM almost instantly identified it as a W140 Benz, but it took some time before Kaibeezy came through with the 600SEL designation AND the actual car being listed. This door belongs to a super low mile and V12 powered 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600 SEL
currently bidding for $17,600 reserve-not-met with a two days to go on eBay.

ReplyDeleteSpecifically, I'll throw S500 out there. Could be any of the sedans, but 500 seems the most common. Not sure of year... '91-92 perhaps?

DeleteThe slim door pocket opening means '92-'94 W140. When someone eventually guesses the answer correct, please explain to me how you were able to discern SWB vs LWB and model number (engine size) from a shot of the door card.
ReplyDeleteNM, KBZ has it (above, the VIN post). '92 600 SEL. Still... no idea how without surfing ebay looking at all of the silver W140's you were able to get the engine size and correct year from just looking at the door card.

DeleteI get it, educated guess work and deduction, but typically in these "what am I" segments there's some mundane detail that was only found on one particular model/year of car.
I was really hoping this one was going to be something like "you see the angle of the ruffles on the door card insert? The fact that they're raked forward at a 43.72 degree angle indicates '92 S600, this was the only year/model they did that". Tidbits like that make "what am I" fun and educational.
The only thing I learned today was that kaibeezy's ebay-fu is strong. But we already knew that.

I'm clearly unable to think outside of the (often) cube-shaped hollow vessel used for transporting or storing goods.
DeleteFrom the doorsill and the handle it's definitely German, and it's no BMW or VW (almost all of them) I recognize, and it's no Audi (a few) I recognize, so it's probably a Benz, at which point my expertise falls into the crapper and I'll go back to commenting on the Japanese product.
