The Zagato Zele was an oddball electric microcar built and sold from 1974 through 1976 by Zagato based out of Milan, Italy. Of the 500 examples built, we've got two of them for sale in a single listing, but only one of them is still powered by the original electric drive...the other is powered by a 600cc superbike engine. The Hillman Imp was a perky little descendant of the Scottish built Linwood Imp and was built by the Rootes Group from 1963 to 1976. Its odd proportions and comely looks were a product of the low buck customer it was trying to attract, but the Italians at Zagato coachworks decided to slap some lipstick, nylons, and a push-up bra on the ole girl -- and created the Zimp. Lancia Automobile S.p.A. was a small automobile manufacturer from Torino, Italy
founded in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia and an independent company until
1969 when it was acquired by Fiat. Today, cars badged with the lance and shield are mostly rebadged pieces of garbage pumped out of Fiat factories, but this wasn't always the case. For an Italian car designed by Pininfarina and produced in limited quantities (less than 10,000) the Lancia Beta Zagato is particularly affordable. The Zagato (or Spyder) was a convertiblized version of the standard Beta coupe but still featured a fixed B pillar and structurally stiffening boxed roof. Probably a good thing for a car well known for rust and quality issues...maybe this explains why the Zagato is so cheap. The Maserati BiTurbo was one of the first twin turbo engines produced for mass consumption and could put out a respectable 150 horsepower/liter - on par with your average VW hot rod dreamer numbers. Unfortunately the result was a turbocharger writing checks that the bottom end couldn't cash...and a pile of metal chips that will cost the owner a king's ransom at your local hairy chested gold chain wearing Maserati mechanic.
