Wasserstopper Equipped: 1980ish Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

Welcome to Daily Turismo's Syncro de Mayo, our May 5th celebration of Volkswagen's four wheel drive system known as Syncro.  Those pop-top Westfalia camper things used to be cheap and easy to run on a budget, but some kind of nostalgic hypnosis has convinced people they are worth somewhat more than scrap value, and you'll find people asking insane amounts for these small Syncro equipped campers. However, DT's tippers are good at finding the diamonds in the rough like this next thing. Find this 1980ish Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia offered for $11,000 in Port Orchard, WA via facebash marketface. Tip from Zach Z.

Syncro de Mayo: 2004 Volkswagen R32

Welcome to Daily Turismo's Syncro de Mayo, our May 5th celebration of Volkswagen's four wheel drive system known as Syncro. Today's first entry into our symphony of synchronicity might not have used the Syncro name in its advertising literature, but the R32 Golf MkIV puts power from its VR6 engine into a haldex controlled center diff that'll put power to the rear wheels when needed. It still maintains a certain degree front front-wheel-drive understeer, but judicious application of the throttle pedal will make the little boxy shaped Golf turn and squat like a Weimaraner in heat. Find this 2004 Volkswagen R32 here on eBay offered for $12,995 buy-it-now or make-offer located in Mesa, AZ.

Mark of the Beast: 1986 Volkswagen Quantum Syncro Wagon

Words and tip by Andy L: The ancient annual festival of Syncro de Mayo is still painfully far away.  We are still talking about Snowmageddon, polar vortexes and winter storms so crappy that they even have names for them now.  And while we are awaiting the end of winter, a beast has arrived that may not only signal the end of your winter woes, but of the end of times.  It has 4 wheel drive, 5 cylinders, 5 speeds and a license plate featuring the mark of the beast.  Find this 1986 Volkswagen Quantum Syncro Wagon offered for $2,500 in South Lincoln, NE via craigslist.

10k: Wanderer: 1990 Volkswagen Golf Country Syncro 4x4 5-Speed

Nothing makes you do a spit-take faster than seeing a car you normally see grounded to the ground, but instead is jacked up on mud tires like it's ready for the Paris-Dakar rally.  However, this isn't some transformed aftermarket ride with all the pedigree and refinement of a West Coast Customs hack job, this is a bonafide factory stock Golf Country Syncro, equipped with all-wheel-drive and factory bullbars.  Find this 1990 Golf Country Syncro 4x4 5-Speed here on eBay currently bidding for $7,700 in Woodbridge, NJ with 1 day to go.

10k: Syncro de Sequentail Gearbox: 2008 Volkswagen R32

The Volkswagen R32 was made in two generations, the first was a manual transmission only version of the Mk4 Golf, and the second version was a DSG only version of the Mk5 Golf.  Purists might miss the clutch pedal, but the Mk5 chassis was sharper and the DSG fires off shifts into the Haldex based all-wheel-drive system like an Thompson sub machine gun.  Find this 2008 Volkswagen R32 offered here on eBay for $12,495 buy-it-now or make-offer located in Spring, TX.

5k: Syncro de Mayo: 2002 Audi TT Quattro

Time to switch gears and offer something for our celebration of Syncro de Mayo with an Audi badge on it -- this time from the VW group PQ34 platform.   The first generation Audi TT was designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas and features a modern take on the Bauhaus school of design.  The fact that the smooth sheet metal covered a plebian VW Golf/New Beetle chassis didn't stop approximately 300,000 people from buying one from the Audi showroom between 1998 and 2006.  Find this 2002 Audi TT Quattro Coupe here on eBay currently bidding for $4,050 reserve-not-met with 7 days to go, located in Farmington, MN.

5k: Syncro de Mayo: 2004 Volkswagen Passat 4Motion 5-Spd

Kicking our Syncro de Mayo party up a notch, we've got this next 4Motion equipped late model, the perfect low buck daily driver for a cheapskate.  It might not impress the neighbors like buying a new M5, but it'll comfortably seat 5 adults, return decent fuel economy, and it has a 5-speed gearbox putting down turbocharged power to all four wheels.  Sure, it eats through coil packs like a jonesing junky chews Chiclets and the engine cooks its internals like an LA inland empire meth lab, but when things work well, the Audi masquerading as a VW is great.  Find this 2004 Volkswagen Passat 4Motion 5-Spd offered for $3,000 CAD ($2,481 USD)via passatworld.com forums.

20k: Syncro de Mayo: 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro

Welcome to Daily Turismo's Syncro de Mayo, our May 5th celebration of all Volkswagen's four wheel drive system known as Syncro.  Up first is this tip and story by DT reader Andy L:
I am going to be off the grid again this year for May 5th, so here is my early submission for Syncro de Mayo.  Find this 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Camper Syncro offered here on eBay for $24,000 buy-it-now (currently bidding for $15,100 reserve-not-met) with 1 day to go, located in Eugene, OR.

5k: Finish The Job: 1990 Volkswagen Golf Rallye G60 Syncro

Syncro de Mayo might be a few months away, but it is never too soon to feature one of Volkswagen's early attempts at building a 4-wheel-drive rally car for the street.  The Mk II Golf Rallye was build in Belguim and never exported to North America by VW, but its age now puts it near within 25 year importation minimum.  Find this 1990 Volkswagen Golf Rallye G60 Syncro here on eBay currently bidding for $2,375 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go, located in Helsinki, Finland.

15k: One Owner: 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 4Motion Wagon

It may be a bit late for Syncro de Mayo, but it is never a bad time to post up a 4Motion equipped, 8-cylinder powered, low-mile Volkswagen Wagon.   The B5 generation Passat was remodeled in late 2000 (known internally as the B5.5 generation) and recieved updated headlights, chrome trim and optional W8 engine.  Find this 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 4Motion Wagon offered for $14,950 on ebay from a dealer in Feasterville-Trevose, PA with 13 days to go.  Tip from IgnatiusReilly who says "Hola! Still hangin' after too much Patron so tardy in submitting for the syncro featurette."

10k: Syncro de Mayo: 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 4Motion

I will probably regret this later, but I'm going to go ahead and say it anyway.  I like the Volkswagen CC.  Sure, it is a Passat with a fastback shape missing the center rear seat, but you know what, I'm fine with that and you should be too.  Why?  Maybe it is the Jameson speaking, but I think it offers an Audiesque experience at Beetlesque prices and there is nothing wrong with that.  Find this 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 4Motion offered for a flexible $13,900 via NASIOC (Needlessly Archetypical Super Impressive Occult...Cult) forums.

20k: Syncro de Mayo: 2013 Volkswagen Golf R

As DT commenter Markiteight pointed, the newer Volkswagen marketing slang for all-wheel-drive is 4Motion, but that  won't stop us from posting yet another Syncro de Mayo special.  It is also an opportune time to point out that the concept of Syncro de Mayo was suggested by DT commenter and long time tipper Andy L (thanks bud!). This time it is the spiritual successor to the Golf R32-- the Golf R. This one may have a salvage title, but it is offered at a deep discount compared to clean title versions. Find this 2013 Volkswagen Golf R offered for $22,750 or best offer on ebay, located in Manville, NJ.
