One of the consequences of vehicles becoming so valuable that they become art is that if you used them for their primary purpose, you'd diminish their value. This bike is beautifully turned out and is probably better than it was when it left Spain over 50 years ago. Bultaco is best known (if known at all) for their off-road successes in the 1960's. Bikes like the Sherpa, Pursang, and Alpina are legendary. Bultaco also tried their hand at on-road bikes. In 1965 they brought out the Mercurio 175, or Mercury in Spanish, advertising it in the U.S. as the Sassy Devil with "small bike maneuverability in a full size motorcycle." The Spanish miracle (El Milagro Español) was the post Civil War economic boom that started in 1959 and ended roughly in 1974 with the global oil crisis. In this period of time Spain's economy blossomed and it went from being a war torn hell hole into the ninth largest economy in the world (and second only in growth percentage to post war Japan)...and a large part of the credit is attributed to a small economy build on a license from Fiat. The Seat Ibiza was a Spanish built supermini that traces its mechanical roots to the Fiat Ritmo, but was given its good looks from Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign. They were never sold in the USA, but over a million were pumped out of the Barcelona based factory between 1984 and 1993. The truth is that a used Ibiza is probably a pile of garbage to drive around and you'd be better served with a Mk I GTi in terms of cost of ownership, speed, reliability...etc...but...BUT...the Seat brings such a wow factor that it just might be worth the deficits.
