Direct Injected 2-Stroke: 1997 Ford Aspire Prototype

Folks have toyed with the concept of direct injected two-stroke engines for years...in fact, I worked at a (now defunct) small alt-fuels engineering firm (BKM) in the early 2000s that was working with Yamaha on direct injection technology for small engines...and it was neat stuff that never went anywhere.  Anyway, at the same time there was a small (not defunct, but now in the unmanned aerial vehicle biz) company in Perth, Australia called Orbital Engines Corp that produced about a hundred direct injection engines and put them in Ford Aspires that drove around making two-stroke noises without the 2-stroke smells.  Here is one that has some engine noises according to the seller -- just head to your local Pep Boys for new parts, shouldn't be a problem. Find this 1997 Ford Aspire offered for $5000 in Newbury, NH. Tip from Cory.

7k: Big Mustang: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer SportTruck prototype

In the late '90s, Ford built a one-off sporting edition of a Ford mid-size SUV using Ford Racing products. They planned to promote it through Ford Racing dealerships to bolster Ford's motorsport history and credibility. It was a great move to build up Ford's public image. So Ford built it... as a Mercury. The supercharged special has lived a long but confusing life, and is now available for relatively little money. Find this 1998 Mercury Mountaineer SportTruck prototype for sale in Huntington Beach, CA for $7,495 via craigslist.

15k: 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra Prototype

The Ford Torino, originally a option for the Fairlane sedan, coupe & wagon, was first introduced as a stand alone model in 1970.  Ford used the Fastback Torino as the base for their NASCAR entrants, although the actual racers shared little in common with production vehicles.  For the 1970 NASCAR season Ford started building a Ford Torino King Cobra to homolgate a new aerodynamic front end - but abandoned the project when NASCAR changed their homogation rules. This 1970 Ford Torino for sale on ebay in Calvert, TX, currently bidding for $18,701 with a few hours to go, is claimed to have a few FoMoCo prototype parts and could be an actual King Cobra prototype.
