The first generation Pontiac Grand Prix was a full sized B-Body based monster that was built on a shared chassis with the Buick Wildcat, Oldsmobile Delmont 88, Pontiac Catalina, and Chevrolet Impala. However, Pontiac was GM's "performance" brand so you could get it with a 421 cubic inch V8 that put 370 horsepower through a set of three two-barrel carburetors known as Tri-Power. In 1962 GM was enjoying a great start
to the NASCAR Grand National season, they'd won 18 of the first 20
races and 12 of those wins were full sized Poncho two doors. It was
also the year that Pontiac introduced the Grand Prix on the full sized B-body (Catalina) chassis. The name hinted
at its racing pedigree, after all, it had bucket seats, 8-lug wheels on huge finned aluminum brakes, and a center
shift console, it had to be a sports car! In 1963, the Grand Prix was given a minor restyling (along will all other full sized Pontiacs) -- it got a cool squared off roof treatment and unique concave rear glass. The fifth generation Pontiac Grand Prix was available from 1988 through 1996 as Pontiac's mid-sized personal luxury coupe. The fastest Grand Prix in 1989/1990 was the ASC/McLaren version that added a turbocharger to GM's 3.1 liter V6 engine for a total output of 205 horsepower -- plus ASC added enough plastic glue-on body cladding to make the car look like a transformer. About 2000 of the Turbo Grand Prixs were built and tipper Andy L sent us this example, along with an excellent write up about it. The first generation Pontiac Grand Prix was a full sized personal luxury coupe offered from General Motors based on the full sized Catalina platform. The early cars were noted for powerful big block V8 engines and 8-lug wheels; no under-engineered components on the big beast. The Grand Prix soldiered on for years and the name was killed just short of the dissolution of GM's Pontiac brand during the 2008 carpocalypse.
