Before Toyota built the 4Runner, there was a small dealership in Wisconsin (Jack Safro in Brookfield) that took about 1500 of the basic Toyota HiLux trucks from 1981-1983 and sent them to Winnebego for a camper shell makeover -- the result was something called the Trekker that was so impressive to the Toyota brass that the concept was turned into the 4Runner. Find this 1981 Toyota Trekker offered for $9995 outside of Milwaukee, WI via craigslist. From the seller:

Legendary 1981 Toyota Trekker 4x4. This is one of the original Jack Safro Trekkers. This truck runs and drives well and is ready to hit the trails! Or this would be a great project for a restoration. Clean body and frame. The rear quarter panels behind the door are just starting to show bubbling and rust. Nice condition for its age. Original color is yellow. This truck even has the all original windows which is very rare. Miles show 59,342 miles.
This vehicle is not restored. Sold As-is as-shown.
We are also the National NOS Trekker parts dealer and have many NOS Trekker parts in stock for purchase.
Please call and ask for Shawn for an appointment. We are a small dealership and someone isn't always on staff.
All cars sold in Wisconsin must pay taxes and get registered through Johnny Safro's Investment Cars LLC.

Nice shape for its age (and expected use). I like those all-metal flared fenders (I think the HiLux had those too). Given the condition, I guess the displayed mileage could be true. I thought this was strong money, but then I searched AutoTrader for HiLux pickups. Holy S&%t they're expensive!
ReplyDeleteAgreed on the fender flares. I like the fact that they're not a bolted on flare, but truly a one-piece part. Details!
DeleteI hadn't even noticed the fender flares, but now they are ALL that I can see, and agree they look boss.
DeleteAdd 100K or 200K to that mileage #. No chance in H E double hockey sticks there's only 59K. Not unless someone lived in the car & partied hard.
ReplyDeleteThere’s some nasty bolts on the bottom of that thing to fight with at some point in the future.
ReplyDeleteStill, it should go on (and on) for quite some time yet!
