The W114 Mercedes-Benz 240D is an abysmally slow car. I should know...because I owned/drove one back in the 1990s. It still had a sense of purpose and aristocratic provenance..but it was slower than a one legged tortoise on horse tranquilizers. It is, however, common to swap something with more power into the old chassis...but I guess the 22R would not have been my first choice, which isn't to say it is a bad idea at all. Find this 1975 Mercedes-Benz 240D with Toyota 22R offered for $3950 in Mission Beach, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!
From the seller:
4 cyl toyota 22r motor just put in. Great on gas, runs great.
White wall tires.
Smog exempt!
Current registration.
Beautiful classic car.
Happy to answer any questions you may have.
$3950
Thanks. Have a great day.

"slower than a one legged tortoise on horse tranquilizers"
ReplyDeleteYes but with a manual transmission if you redlined the engine all the way to 2000 rpm or whatever and droped the clutch the bigass flywheel would rocket you to 5mph faster than a one legged tortoise on horse tranquilizers falling off the roof of a garage. Unless you had a rear tire on a San Francisco cable car track. At least that was my experience.
Take the V-6 out of the Tacoma next door......!
ReplyDeleteTempting, my wife kinda wants a benz from this era. I'd love a 300TD, but they're getting pricy.
