There are two potential paths when building a fast custom car -- the first is to make it a sleeper, hide the engine and make it look stock, the second is to make it a waker, which involves poking shiny bits of the engine through a sawz-all cut hole in the hood. DeleteThis guy retained the truck intake manifold and accessories, hence the hood hole. Won't fit otherwise. The GenIII/GenIV engines will fit but only with LS car-style intake and accessories. Cheaper to leave the truck stuff on there and cut a hole.
DeleteThanks for the explanation. Cheaper yes, but to me it is an admission of defeat. I suppose a 1994 BMW 318 is not a terribly valuable car , so quick and dirty did the trick. On the plus side, it probably is a lot of fun to drive.
DeleteThe 1994 E36/5 (318ti) wasn't sold in the US by BMW. Either this is a later year car, or imported from elsewhere. Or maybe VIN engineered.
