Today is Star Wars day -- May the force be with you! Can you believe that Star Wars is 40 years old? To give some reference, the corollary to Star Wars back in 1977 was a movie that came out in 1937, like Shirley Temple's Heidi or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Now, do you feel old? I do! Anyway, to celebrate Star Wars day, today's Thursday Twister is for you guys to pick your favorite car from 1977.

What car from 1977 would you own?
For me, without question, the 1977 Pontiac Trans-Am. Both 'Star Wars' and 'Smokey and The Bandit' were released this month actually and I was seven years old. It was good to be a kid... sans the clothing of course. Click here if you want a good laugh.
ReplyDeleteMy oldest brother was in college and his buddy had this identical car. (not bad for a college kid, i know) When he would come over, I used to beg him to sit in the driver's seat when it was parked and play make believe. No matter is was a black T/A with black seats with t-tops off and it's been sitting in the South Texas sun. 1st degree burns be damned. The Bandit had wicked power slides to do and a "Texas Bubble Gum Machine" to evade!

Probably the Honda Accord was the most influential car of 1977. I put down a deposit on one and after 4 months of waiting bought a used vw dasher instead.

1977 was pretty bleak.
1977 Datsun 280Z was standard with an 2.8 litre, overhead cam straight 6, fuel injection and radials. 5-speed and AC were optional. I think it was the best buy, most fun and reliable car of 1977, hands down.

I was going to say a 280Z as well. There's no Z car goodness missing from them that you can't fix with some earlier bumpers. But then I remembered that you could get one of these in 1977 too. While the 280Z is a rare example of an early 1970s car that had managed to age relatively well, this is an even rarer breed: A car that was introduced in the late 1970s and somehow managed to avoid all the terrible styling trends out in force at the time.

i got confused - assumed you meant the best 1977 car available from local online options, which (using my ex-local SFCL) really came down to a clean Mustang II Cobra or a super cool Toronado XS with the glass-meets-glass corner on the back window
