11,750 RPM Commuter: 2007 Locost 7

The Lotus 7 epitomized Colin Chapman's philosophy of high performance through low weight and simplicity.  The original 7 was produced by Lotus from 1957 through 1972.  A cottage industry of 7 clones sprung up after production ended and exists to this day.  Very few of these clones are the same as the builders can be very opportunistic with the donor car parts used and drivetrains selected.   Today's Locost example is powered by a 2003 Yamaha R1 motorcycle engine backed up by a 6 speed sequential gearbox.  Find this 2007 Locost 7 for sale in Middlefield, CT for $10,000 via craigslist.

The seller mentions this car was recently used daily commuter in the summer and fall when he had a more relaxed commute than he does now.  They mention the car has no equal on the back roads and that there isn't a more fun and interesting form of transportation with the warning to be prepared for lots of waves.

The motorcycle gauge cluster was the only viable option since a 12,000 rpm tach was needed.  Kirkley seats and Simpson 5 point harnesses finish off the spartan interior.  There are no windows fitted to the car other than the front windshield.  The only luxury feature is a pseudo convertible canvas top that connects the top of the front windshield to the rear roll bar.

The R1 engine is good for 150 horsepower which is plenty of motivation for this lightweight beast.  A Quaife reverse box was added to the transmission for backing up.  The car comes with limited slip diff and also a solid rear end.  The running gear is said to come from a RX-7.  Front brakes are discs with drums in the rear backed up by Wilwood dual master cylinders.  The steering has a quickener to speed things up.
